Cool Get an I7 !! and help me overclock Mine!

    Asus P6T
    i7 920
    6 gb g.skill
    2 x 320 gb seagate
    antec 900 case
    8800 GT

Upgraded from e6600 to I7 920 it is like taking the leap from a Celeron to a Dual Core (my previous upgrade) I notice the speed difference in everything I do

    - when I open a folder it doesn't think about it... it opens.
    - When I turn a 3d object (with video) in photoshop... it turns and very fast.
    - when I animate a 3d object in photoshop it does this seamlessly
    - When I render it is about 5 times as fast as the dual core.
    - Sony Vegas does not tax it at all and unrendered playback is as fast as rendered playback.

I can have photoshop rendering a 3D object with video into animation, Sony vegas rendering a haf hour video clip and play fallout 3 at ultra high graphics settings faster than it played on high on the E6600... all at the same time! and I am sure I could throw much more at it, but need some more cpu intensive programs.
Fallout 3 has easily a 20 frame per second gain ... its almost as if the processor is too fast for it! However I have not noticed as huge a gain in other games... apart from there is no jolts or drops of framerate in any of my games now.

These were the main questions I wanted answered when choosing my new setup.

Unfortunatly at the time everyone was saying to go for the Q9950, no one really knew how it performed on sony vegas and photoshop which was all I really wanted it for.

I wasn't expecting an improvement on games at all, but had a very nice surprise there too!.

I hope my comments help you decide which processor is right for you.....cough cough I7!

Anyhow it is fast but everyone wants something faster ;-) does anyone have any idea how to overclock properly all the settings etc, I want to take it to about 3.2 (lets not go mad here, the thing is almost self aware as it is!) but don't seem to be able to find any settings to use apart from for a 4 gb overclock... Does anyone have same motherboard as me?!?!?!"?!

I get an idea but problem is pcper are using a 965 processor and different Ram, I really have no idea how to overclock this chip (i7 920) and would be more than happy to use the exact same settings as someone else with the same chip. I tried to use the same setting in this review but got blue screen aghh! I had a p5w dh deluxe before which was sooo easy to overclock (it only had a couple of options!), this thing is way over my head. multiplyers .. what are they ?!!>? lol

A simple rule of overclocking (I think it's number 3): do not use other people's settings, even if all the hardware appears similar. Every CPU is different, as is every bit of RAM, every motherboard etc. Just because someone can run those settings, doesn't mean you can - particularly if they are more experienced at the game than you.

There is no substitute for trying settings yourself. Just take it slowly and have some patience.

I agree that the only way to find out is dig in and see what your combination of parts will do.

However I recently started tinkering with i7 myself, i7 920, MSI x58 platinum & 6gb of low latency Gskill memory.

I currently have it humming along effortlessly at 20x170 3.4ghz on the stock cooler (no prolong loads of course).

Basically my vcore is stock/1.2vcore, memory is running 1400mhz at 7-7-7-18 1.6vdimm, qpi voltage is + 0.1

The only thing I had to do is up the ref clock speed and increase the qpi voltage. At the default qpi voltage all I could do was like 150 on the ref clock or whatever its called.

My board doesn't have a ton of options but it would seem as though allot of bells and whistles are not necessary to get a nice OC with these cpus.

Good luck with the overclocking, so far I couldn't be happier with the performance, a little pricey but the system runs like banshee.

EDIT: I also disabled Hyperthreading to help reduce load temps on the stock cooler, I also have EIST and turboboost disabled.

Still no luck getting any stable overclock, is there a small overclock that enables very little to be changed that I could do to be on the safe side?

Actually, no, that's a sub section of Rule #1. YMMV. Rule #2 was "Heat kills". I don't think there is a rule #3 since rule #1 covers pretty much everything else.

YMMV? I hate accronyms - feels like I am at work lol we have something called a BUM - Business Unit Meeting where we meet out HBU Head of Business Unit lol! no one else in my company even finds it slightly amusing!
    Heat Kills - I agree !!

I would like to get this right no w2ay I want to damage my I7

Re: Get an I7 !! and help me overclock Mine!

I've got one of these boards, with my i920 at 3.8GHz, but it's taking 1.3825V to keep it there - 3.7 I can do at 1.35V. One thing I learned: get the uncore (UCLK) speed down to no more than 2xRAM speed. I also found I needed 1.65 QPI volts to get stability as well.

If you list all your current settings I can see if they make sense.

YMMV is the first, MAIN rule of overclocking and encompasses many of the concepts. YMMV = Your Mileage May Vary. 2 chips from identical steppings and week numbers will not necessarily hit the same top OC. In fact, they can be from the very same production platter and still not hit the same top OC. YMMV covers things from how much vcore your CPU needs for a certain speed to how hot it will run. This also encompasses what Meridian was saying about not using other people's settings. Just cause a set of settings works for one person, the next person over with the exact same setup, same chip stepping and week number, everything the same, won't turn out the same.

Edit: And you shouldn't hate acronyms. They're as easy to solve as a tiny bit of typing and a Google click away from being answered.
