    PSU Voltages Question

Was wondering if there might be a problem with the +12V on the Liberty 620W that I have in DreamCatcher. When you run OCCT one of the neat things it does is give you graphes of voltages as well as core temps. Please look at the attached graph and you see the power "drops" that occur. Is this "normal" or am I looking at a problem??

    Re: PSU Voltages Question

It's really difficult to say from just the one test.

    Is the system stable?
What does a DVR read? (During the same test would be most applicable.)

Sorry, yup. DVR, you got it.

I trust those far more than software programs. Can you monitor it with a DVR for the same time you run a test? If so, I'd stop worrying about the PSU. Perhaps look at the connection points of the video card.

In addition: From what Ive read (cant remember where) Your 12v should fluctuate up and down only by 5%. Maybe Im wrong but I would not trust a drop to 11 in 60 minutes of testing

Once the smoke is let out, all the magic is gone....hope it's not a total loss, just the PSU, maybe?

    Re: PSU Voltages Question

The noise and light show appeared to just come from the psu so hope that was it. Should be able to find out as I managed to find a used Infiniti 650 over at anandtech last night that should be here for the weekend. Run a test then.

If I want to re-use the Liberty's custom sleeved cables I have in place may need to do a little "nip & tuck" as the cables have 6-pin plugs with the Infiniti using 5-pin sockets. The 6th pin on the cables is "empty" so just need tomake sure the wiring is the same!

    Re: PSU Voltages Question

The Liberty series (and the Infiniti series to a lesser extent) is known for blowing out the primary side thanks to some glue used at the factory that goes conductive when heated. The problem's apparently been corrected now (and if it hasn't I'll know about it soon enough as I have a newer Liberty in my review pile), but for a while there these were dying left and right.

The good news is though that a primary side failure usually means the rest of the rig will be ok.

There definatly is plenty of heat in the MicroFly case as ambient "floats" around 35 - 40C in this assembly and I sure it didn't help matters that the Liberty's fan is/was right above an 8800GT that's core is water cooled but everything else is passive. The gpu is folding 24/7 also.

That makes me feel a whole lot better with the exception of you're saying "and the Infiniti series to a lesser extent". As this is a used unit maybe I should find out how "old" the psu is.

BTW the 620 is one of three that I am/was running.......400W in BHrDx and 500W in YsSMN. Also OW would you per chance know why the 400 and 620 have 6-pin sockets vs the 500W's 5-pin sockets (Infiniti is the same)? As it appeard the 6-pin plug on the cables (620/400) is "empty"?
