Need a replacement chipset fan for my DFI nF4 SLI-DR mobo ..

Hey everyone .. So like 2 days ago, the stock chipset fan in DFI nF4 SLI-DR motherboard just died on me ... I am trying to revive it these days, but in case it doesn't work, I'm gonna need an aftermarket chipset cooler for my DFI nF4 SLI-DR motherboard ... by the way, I have my video card plugged in the bottom PCI-E slot, one which is not directly in front of the chipset fan cooler space ..

So, any chipset fan cooler suggestions for my DFI nF4 SLI-DR motherboard ?

Vantec makes a decent one, if your board doesn't have a strange configuration. Don't waste time on that fan, they all go after a few years.

The evercool vc-re is another choice, and it still gives you the option of using the upper pci-e should you want to. I use this chipset coller on my DFI nf4 board and it works great. Easy to install. No need to remove the mobo from the case. Just use a hair dryer on the old cooler to soften up the TIM, then snip off the heads of the existing pushpins on the old chipset cooler and then twist and pull the existing cooler off, clean the old gunk off the chip, and then install the new cooler via the supplied pushpins.

Sometimes if you take the original chipset cooler off, you can remove the old fan. Then you can get creative with a 40mm fan, a little epoxy and a file. I've done that a couple of times.

Re: Need a replacement chipset fan for my DFI nF4 SLI-DR mobo ..

OK thanx for the help everyone .. So I think I'm gonna buy this Evercool VC-RE .. I got two more questions about the thermal compound re-application procedure ...

    1) The Evercool VC-RE fan kit already has some thermal compuound in it. Do you think that's good enough, or should I buy some Arctic Silver Ceramique just for this .. ? I mean, I know that Arctic Silver Ceramique may give slightly better results than the compound coming with the Evercool VC-RE, but would the difference be so much that I should specially buy Arctic Silver Ceramique for this ? Also, to be very honest, I really just want to get the new fan up and running .. I'm not really crazy about reaching the best possible performance ... So would the thermal compound coming with the Evercool VC-RE be good enough for me ?

    2) Secondly, about the alcohol cleaning substance thats needed to clean up the chip's top before re-appling some thermal compound ... does this alcohol solution need to be something specific, or can it be just any other ordinary alcohol solution used for cleaning household stuff ?

To clean the old gunk off, I use 99% isopropyl alcohol, you can pick it up at any pharmacy.

I have installed about 3 of these evercool chipset coolers on three of my DFI boards, and I think I used the supplied white goop that they provided. I may have used OCZ Ultra 2 on one of the boards, but I can't remember. I recall being a bit concerned because it might be electrically conductive and I didn't want to smear too much that it oozes over adjacent chips or solder points. Can't remember for sure though.

    Good luck.

If the heatsink is flat you don't need much TIM at all.
