it's ironic you quote the name of the site in a sudo defense of amd, afterall the site was once amdmb.com and primarily became pcperspective to reach a broader base of users, mainly those of the intel camp.

yeah I know it was silly of me Brandito. Irony intended!
I joined when it was amdmb.com , during my AMD Fan Boy days. I was extremely prejudiced against anything Intel at the time but gradually was able to overcome it.
I am happy to say I am really getting back into AMD builds again though my main system is an Intel based putter.
Next will be an AMD based Supercomputer based on NVIDIA TESLA and CUDA technology. I can't wait to build that.
Maybe we will all see Supercomputers in our homes in our life times?

In pure processing power, if you have a modestly high end GPU in your PC, you already have the equivelent of 5 years ago's supercomputers at your fingertips. The term supercomputer, on it's own, will remain an elusive term meant for whatever is shooting for the SPEC records that year.

When I think about Supercomputers I think of the $1,000,000 Cray computers or "Zero" the liquid cooled Supercomputer in the original "Rollerball" movie. And machines I read about like the University of Tennessee version built with something like 1000 G5 Macs connected together to make something even faster then the Cray Supercomputers. Then there was a string of Supercomputers built using 1000's of AMD CPU's.

A valid comparison is a modern desktop of 5 years ago VS something like the computer the NAVY had at Balboa Naval Hospital back in the early 1960's that took up whole rooms and were programmed with IBM punch cards. I still remember those from when I was a kid.

These new NVIDIA TESLA Supercomputers 250x faster then the fastest work station is what I consider mind blowing and serious bang for the $ when you can buy 1 for $10K. That VS the room filling machine that one researcher at a time can have access to. Now companies can buy one for every researcher in their varied departments. Isn't that awesome? And you can use Intel or AMD CPU's and MB's to build them or less fun to buy one already built.

Wait, are you even taking actual processing power into account? That mainframe from the 60's was lucky if it could process a single kiloflop! PC's of 5 years ago were well onto the megaflops level. No, I think your way off base (no pun intended). Thinking in terms of processing power, a Radeon 4870 already has as much processing power as a Cray from the 90's. When we're talking near Gigaflop power here, you cannot go back so far. Gigaflop level, single chip power, is still a fairly new concept.

after being "bitch slapped" aka; like totally blindsided for sure! (from Van Nuys Valley speak 2nd edition)

We find our "Hero" Howie picking himself slowly off the deck suffering from confusion and visual impairment by a temporary glitch in the "howie9000" cerebral graphics processor. With massive star clusters appearing in NVIDIA & ATI primary colors.

Well, I hate to date myself but prior to punch cards we soldered wires to change the programming on some of the old computers.. Can't begin to tell you how happy we were when they put patch boards in.

Then came the punch cards... what a marvel that was.

Well, you got 8 years up on me, but 40 is old-ish. Does that count? Lets put it this way, I'm old enough to remember the end of the Viet Nam war and real hippies. Not exactly ancient, but been around the block a few times

Aww it's ok I know I will never see a real admission but the unvarnished truth is that Canadians are Americans in denial.

Have you ever seen the T-shirt that shows a map of the Grand old USA with a Red baseball cap on top? I love that shirt it's captioned "Canada , Americas hat!" http://www.bustedtees.com/canadaamericashat

What is new to you? The "Canada, America's hat" joke (which is always a classic ), or something else?

    Re: AMD- no longer

    OMG

    This thread is still alive.

Well yet again its an AMD vs intel thread....

Let me give an extra 2 cents, and this is the same thing I tell my customers at work.

First of all let me say and remind ppl like someone mentioned that we are @ amdmb.com

Now I certainly still am an AMD fanatic.
But am I blind to facts?Nope.

Is anyone saying a PII is faster then an i7.
    NO NOT AT ALL.
Of course a i7 is faster,BUT if you take into consideration prices and what the primary use of the rig is going to be then AMD might still be the best option.

Ive said this before and Ill say it again, for gaming for example AMD is still a better choice.
Why am I saying this if an i7 can get 140ish fps in Crysis and AMD can do 100ish?
THATS exactly my point, who cares unless your a benchmark wh0re.Its the video card thats important, and in most cases serious gamers play with Vsync on which means your fps will be steady at whatever refresh rate your at.
Like I said video card is more important and if you get an AMD processor thats a lot cheaper then an i7 that logically means you have room to put in a more beefier video card which in the end will mean better gaming performance then if you got the i7 with a lesser video card.
    Catch my drift?
