    exFAT? That's something I might have to consider...
    I guess with HD, movie files can become rather large.

    Maybe I might just have to partition the drive so Macs can write to it too. Not sure whether they can write to exFAT yet.

    And I'll give Puppy Linux a try when the need arises.

    There must be something about this thread that I missed.

    Any Linux at a Bash terminal , say the disk is sdb, can do it with the command.

    mkdosfs -F32 /dev/sdb
    Just to make sure there wasn't anything special I tried it on my 1.5TB disk. It took only a few seconds. In the past I have used Fat32 on the entire 500Gb disks.

    I think what you're overlooking is that using NTFS on Mac OS X isn't difficult.
