Intel Core 2 Duo @ 4GHZ on thermalright ultra 120 extreme?

I've got the e6420 and i'm running 3.4ghz which is a 60% overclock from stock and it's stable and cool enough under air. I just ordered the thermalright ultra 120 extreme. I heard alot of bad things about it but the cooling performance on air in unmatched. I'm willing to take my chances and see how it goes. I'de like to overclock to 3.8ghz minimum once i get the cooler. I just wondered if anyone has ever had a e6420 stable @ 4ghz on air? I'm overclocking and get the thermalright cooler because brothers in arms hells highway is killing my machine. CPU load is crazy high and my gpu heats up like crazy... Maybe it's because my gpu doesn't offload physics so my cpu is doing all the work?

I've read 100s of reviews. The professional reviews are really good. But alot of ppl have been saying the surface isn't 100% flat and u have to mill or lap it? That's ridiculious.. I don't want to have to lap the damn thing. I wanted to know if anyone has the ultra 120 extreme.. and see what they think?

It have multiple and they're great. They aren't flat but are meant to curve along with the CPU. One of my quads was flat though so I did have to lap that one. Otherwise is still one of the best HS's available.

I have two U120Es and sold a third one. ALL of them needed lapping. Once lapped, yes, they are excellent, probably the best performing heatsinks except for their big brother, the IFX-14, which no one seems to actually own and use.

If you don't want to lap the TRUE, I see no point in paying the princely sum for one. I highly recommend both the Sunbeamtech Core Contact Freezer and the OCZ Vendetta (see my signature - machines 2, 3, and 5). Both of those coolers will easily perform on par with an unlapped U120E, cost half as much, and come stock with a fan.

If you want no compromises in performance and don't mind the high price and necessary labor for lapping, then yes, the Ultra 120 Extreme is the right choice.

In my opinion, that design decision (manufacturing shortcoming?) did not work in the real world as had been anticipated. For some users though, I'm sure contoured surface may have matched the CPU's heatspreader perfectly. Not in my case.

Yeah some of mine are ok. I didn't check contact using thermal paste but the temps are ok. Another one was just horrible as the CPU was pretty planar using the CC check.

It's based on the CPU you get. Some have a flat surace some have a curved surface. When the HSF is properly fitted, it is unmatched. 4.0GHz will be very ahrd. I think you will need to be very lucky on the CPU that you got, as it might need some high voltages. 3.8GHz should be attainable.

Re: Intel Core 2 Duo @ 4GHZ on thermalright ultra 120 extreme?

Yeah i noticed i have to crank up the voltages. I can get 3.6ghz at 1.5875v and i've booted before at 3.8 but stock hsf sucks so i don't keep it overclocked anymore. I'm gonna wait until my thermalright ultra 120 extreme comes in. I might be able to get 4ghz just maybe if i run like 1.6250v+ or something. I know that i had to up my northbridge voltage to like 1.4v to get it past 3ghz stable. Anyway we'll see. I'll take pics of everything when i get it. I wonder if anyones done an expert installation tutorial on it? Also i bought a 92mm fan a while ago for the HR-03 GT i was gonna buy but never did. The ultra 120 extreme needs a 120mm fan? This 92mm fan i have puts out like 67cfm or something... its high powered.

Thus the reason for 120 in the product name.

A 92mm fan may not even be mountable.

It won't be with the default clips. I'm sure you could bodge it on though. But then the cooler is designed for a 120mm, so cooling will be drastically reduced with a 92mm because a large part of the fins won't be cooled.

I figured that. I'm gonna order a high powered 120mm fan right now. thanks

Re: Intel Core 2 Duo @ 4GHZ on thermalright ultra 120 extreme?

I'm having a hard time getting my cpu past 3.4ghz stable... I mean i have at 1:1 ratio at 425mhz fsb and memory is at like 425mhz. memory is at 5-5-5-12 and i don't know what to do with static read control... i have it at auto. I tryed 440mh fsb which got into windows then it restarted... i couldn't get into windows at 475mhz.. i tweaked vcore up to 1.6250v with no go. I set the Northbridge to 1.4v and i didn't know what to do with the southbridge so i left it at auto. Maybe i need 1066mhz ram that'll support high stable speeds than 800mhz? since at 3.4ghz it's sitting at 850mhz... 50mhz overclocked... I also tryed to up the voltage of the ddr2 to 2.15v rather than it's default 2.1v... I'de just like some input.

    thanks

Use a different CPU:RAM ratio so your RAM still runs underclocked to make sure its not the RAM. Then do the same thing with the multiplier to see what your max FSB speed is. Find all your max speeds of your components then put them together.

I wonder if anyone else has my setup with the asus p5b-plus and cpu, ddr2800 memory type.
