I'm going to build a new computer soon. I already bought the case. It's a Silverstone Sugo2 w/ 4 80mm high cfm fans and 2 40mm fans, as well as a 500w Antec Neo power modular power supply, ASUS 775 microatx board with raid support (not sure yet on specific model). I'm thinking about dual channel OCZ 4gb ddr2-800 kit and a Intel core 2 quad q9550 with a rosewill 92mm cooler for overclocking . Also i'm gonna run a ASUS Xonar and run Optical out to a home theater audio system in 5.1. I'm gonna use my old 192 core GTX260 as the graphic card. I'm also thinking about running a 4 drive raid0 of WD1600BEKT in 2.5" form so i can fit 4 of them in the 2 3.5" slots. Then i'm gonna run a spinpoint f1 1tb as backup and a sata interface liteon 22x dvd/rw. This PC is gonna be used mainly as a home theater pc but i'll be gaming as well as lots of video encoding! so i hope it's gonna be fast enough? LOL i'm hoping for over 220MB/s read/ write with these scorpios in a raid0.. hehe
and, unless I missed it, you plan on running this on the ich10r ?
or are you actually also getting a real raid controler ?
That's my question. Is the chipset raid controller not very good on typical asus motherboards with 775 socket? My raid performance has not been spectacular with the ICH8R chipset on my Asus p5b-plus. Should i use a PCI-E x1 controller or something that can deliver more performance than chipset based raid controllers? Read my thread about my raid setup for info on my ICH8R performance in Intel Active Matrix Controller.
well I have no experience with ich10r (but with ich9r) and I would think that you'd need a hardware controler to take advantage of more then 2 drives in raid 0. And If I had 4 drives in the mix I'd probly go raid 5.
I'm not exectly informed of raid controler (so correct me if I'm wrong) but isnt more then a 1x pci-e slot kinda better ? From what I know most good controler are 8x or 4x pci-e.
I just don't know why you would need that much bandwidth. Pci-e 1x is over a gigabyte of bandwidth i believe? Even with 4 drives spitting out 70Mb/s each wouldn't amount to pci-e limit. Then again i don't know the transfer speed specs of pci-e 1x etc so correct me if i'm wrong. Also i'm looking for great performance and i'm willing to take the chance with raid0 on 4 drives since this is going in a htpc case so room is limited so 2.5" drives will work great.
