Don't use a penny, or a cent for a spacer.

Lordy that brings back some memories: people removing heat spreaders then using weird things instead. The man is correct: thermal contact will be near non-existent.

does the xp-120 fit flat or are the heat pipes resting on the retention bracket?

if it sits flat, there should be enough pressure to hold it tight to the core. i would remove the board from the case because that clip system is a pain and you don't want to crack the core.

The xp 120 will work but it isn't as tight as you would like. I am using one on a topless 90nm 3400 s754 but it didn't help oc etc.

well the 3400 is old history that we both shared in expectations and were somewhat disappointed.

NO PENNY!? The chip I bought is AMD ATHLON 64 4000+ 2.6GHz MOBILE 754 CPU AMN4000BKX5BU. Yes the clip system is a pain, don't recall if the pipes sit on the bracket or not, I don't think they do. If the heat pipes touch, what then?

the mobiles are the same as a standard chip without the heat spreader. The pipes don't hit.
You can search the modding stores (crazy pc etc) to see if they have spacers (or adapter) If you want to make one yourself I don't think the thickness is critical, but flatness is.

Wow. OK to clarify, this product supports up to 40W heat transfer on Turion processors while the one I purchased is 62W Newark. Will it still work properly

You can get one made with silver, the only thing better then copper.

If you don't want the TR 120 (or older zalman) then it's your only option.

my exp with the old 754 mobiles ( and yes i have a ton because i had a wide range folding at one point )

I was ghetto on some and just took generic heatsinks and sat them on the CPU firmly.... that helped for the most part though OCin g was not all that great.

I finally broke down and bought some TT 120 towers. They were screw down which was great

I got the xp-120, i'm too lazy for overclocking so not too worried there.
