ATI Drops Support for Pre-R6xx series cards with Catalyst 9.4

Guess it had to happen sooner or later ...

    http://www.pcper.com/comments.php?nid=6855

I just found out with the upcoming release of the Catalyst 9.3 driver (sometime in mid-March), ATI will officially stop supporting Radeon cards based on the R500 architecture and earlier with the monthly driver releases. Instead, those older GPUs will be supported on a quarterly driver release schedule. (Note: Catalyst 9.3 will support ALL Radeon GPUs - 9.4 and beyond will implement "legacy status" on the aforementioned cards.)

This bytes. My x1900xt isn't even 3 years old, and they were selling x1950s until beginning of '07. I would have liked to see them retain support for post x1800xt cards.
AMD R7 1700x. MSI B350 Tomahawk. 2x8gb Corsair vengeance LPX. Coolermaster Hyper 212 evo. Corsair Carbide 200R. EVGA GTX 970.

Good thing Iím swapping out my daughters X850XT for one of my old HD3870. That X850XT still plays todayís games fairly decently, though the HD3870 is obviously a better card.

I agree that the X1800 and newer cards should still be supported though I suppose that this might indicate that new cards are immanent.

These cards won't be supported with the monthly Catalyst release but will still be updated quarterly. Not too bad really.

Yup according to the more indepth article at Extremetech, ai5000 is correct ...

    http://www.extremetech.com/article2/...2342476,00.asp

After Catalyst 9.3, products prior to the R6xx generation of graphics cards (that go by the Radeon HD 2000 series brand names) will be changed to "legacy support status." This means that these products will get quarterly WHQL driver updates, instead of monthly updates. AMD assures us that these products will still receive critical "hotfix" drivers if high-priority fixes are needed.

Well, part of the reason updates get dropped is because the newer drivers don't even optimize for old cards anymore. Typically, each card has a specific driver where things run the best. Cat 9.4 isn't going to be made for 3 year old cards, so driver updates just might send your compatibility and performance backwards. For example, I found that Cat 8.5 was the best release for my 3870. Anything after that seemed worse in one way or another. The best advice is not to upgrade drivers unless you have problems!

Even if they are supporting them say every 4 months least they are still suporting them Nvidia stopped updating drivers for the FX5200 at G-force 175.16 unless they too are doing it every 4 months.

Most of the time you won't see much benifits from such a older card with new drivers I tested nVidia's on a FX5200 compared them both it aded 100 points to it in 3D Mark.

But even so least they will continue to support it I suppose they will add all the new performance updates on each 4 month driver update.
