nForce 3 mobo Vista x64 shows MORE ram than is installed

Here's an odd one. Took the guts of my old system (K8NHA Grand nForce 3 250Gb mobo/Athlon 64 3400+/2Gb GSkill PC3200/6600GT 128mb AGP) and put together a system for my fiance. Installed Vista Home Premium x64, runs fine on this setup.

The odd thing is Vista says there is 4Gb of memory, system only has 2Gb, mobo takes 2Gb max. No problems when I ran XP on this setup. Is it reporting a page or swap file? Like I said system runs fine just trying to figure out why this OS shows more mem than is actually installed.

It's probably just a glitch in the system it that board a Socket 754 AMD I have never had VISTA running on a 754 board it could just be that oh it could be reporting a 2GB swap/Virtual Page mine for XP is 3GB.

If the system is running fine I shouldn't worry to much try playing a game and see if it crashes due to a memory problem if not then it should be fine.

She won't be running any games on it. Putting a TV tuner card in it this weekend. Going to use it mainly for TV/DVDs/streaming SiriusXm while we work out.

Arrr well thats a resource user so it should be fine I just think it's an error from the BIOS reporting to VISTA thats all.

Re: nForce 3 mobo Vista x64 shows MORE ram than is installed

I've run Vista x64 on a socket 939 nforce3 ultra board (MSI K8N-Neo2 Platinum) before. I put a dual-core X2 4200 and 2GB DDR400 in the box, but the performance was kind of poor because the default microsoft drivers were not optimized for the chipset.

There is also a bug in the default AGP GART driver which prevents ATI AGP cards from working correctly. Even if you have an Nvidia card, the AGP bus will be locked at 1x with sideband and fastwrite disabled. If 32bit vista is installed, the user can use the XP AGP GART driver as a workround (not 100% stable). No fix is available for the 64bit version. Nvidia initially planned driver support for nforce3 on vista, but they changed their mind 3 months after vista was released.

I strongly suggest you stick with XP on that board to avoid performance and stability issues.
