Hey guys, been experiencing some weird problems as of late... A few weeks ago I did a system clean (even blew out the tower!) and updated my AVG to the new 8.5. I believe Firefox also had an update around that time as well...
Ever sense then though, my computer has been having some slowing/halting problems... I am running vista 32 Home Premium. It boots up fine, launches my normal programs (i have some widgets as well). All is well until I tell it to do a command.
I usually run a program called "End It All" upon start up to clear out any unneeded processes. Even that sometimes stops responding. It sems no matter what I do, it doesn't want to work sometimes, where other times it's perfectly normal...
On a side note, when it does work, FF seems to not want to open for me after I close it. I double click the exe and it just sits there and does nothing.
I have no idea if these area all correlated, i just would like some thoughts.
I had the same thing when I updated AVG8.0 to 8.5. The installation had borked at the very last point but everything seemed to work when the PC restarted except for intermittent slowdowns. The solution for me was wiping out all the existing AVG updates and getting it to update again. You can do this by deleting everything that's in the following folder. Restart the PC and then get AVG to update again:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\avg8\update
(you can paste that address into Windows Explorer's Address Bar to go straight there)
** That folder might be different on Vista
Failing that, try uninstalling AVG and reinstall it.
EDIT: There's nothing wrong with Zone Alarm. It does a good job. Jimz has a good point though - if the wrong things are blocked in ZA, it can affect performance. Same applies to any software firewall.
I asked because my brother in law had the same issue. He did the install upgrade and wasnt able to get online....using zonealarm. In his particular case he happened to have some particular version that wouldnt play nice with AVG upgrade. Everything was fine until the update.
So he disabled Z/A...fired up the Windows firewall and was able to get online
and get the correct Zonealarm.
Your case sounded familiar so I thought Id ask.
There's a good chance of that too. I've had issues with ZA and other programs on occasions. The workaround each time was a different version of ZA. So many different causes for the same sorts of symptoms!
Yeah. Indeed...I had similar with zonealarm...it may have been back with SP 2...I dont recall. Did some upgrade anyway and couldnt get online...which is about being locked out of your home! The install of whatever it was went fine
but unable to connect. After tearing out most of my hair I thought? It has to be the firewall...theres nothing left it could be. And it was the the firewall.
The point is...that you mention is we all go thru the standard things to look at with diagnosing a problem....and often the most obvious cause is the thing we dont expect....particularly when we run into version complications.
Anyway, I hope the OP has solved his issue with a new install or a different product.
Who knows? Might even be something on the "end it all" program that knocks off a critical service....perhaps unintentionally.[some shared item]...or in order to speed up his stuff hes knocking a critical start up[etc]
