    Re: anyone try ubuntu 9.04?

This was with a new installation:
    64-bit Ubuntu 9.04
    ext4 file system
Asus EAH 3870 video card (see sig)

    Wow major pia.
Figured I'd post this in case anyone else had any of these issues.

First I couldn't get the ATI driver to enable.
It would do the searching for available drivers for 5 minutes then
Sorry, the Jockey backend crashed. Please file a bug at:

    ubuntu-bug jockey-common

Trying to recover by restarting backend.

I finally went here and followed the manual installation directions.

Of course this is all with using my TV as a monitor and without the nonfree ATI driver I couldn't see the upper and lower panels until I cranked the panel sizes to 70 in properties.

Then after I got that sorted out I went to Hulu and I got the prompt to install add-ons so I did.
When I went to the latest episode of Fringe the player wouldn't work.
All I got was a black window.
Back to Ubuntu forums where I found this thread.

Installed the flashpluign-installer as per the directions and uninstalled the swfdec-mozilla plugin.
That took care of Hulu but now the HDMI sound didn't work.
This happened to me with Intrepid a while back so I looked at my Ubuntu tips log book and found my notes:

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...61&postcount=4
Install Gnome ALSA mixer - Applications>Add Remove.
Go to Applications>Sound and Video>Gnome ALSA mixer>ATI ATI R6xx HDMI tab and check IEC958 (lower left.
Go to System>Preferences>Sound>Devices tab set Sound playback and Music and Movies to HDA ATI HDMI (ALSA).

Still didn't work even though the tests in System>Preferences>Sound>Devices worked.

    http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1009407
Hi I am just adding this for clarity for those people struggling to get their sounds working through pulseaudio using the ATI drivers and HDMI interface.

What this enabled you to do is play multiple sound stream at the same time from a number of different programs. For example a messenger app and music app.

What i did to solve this problem:

    Code:

    aplay -l

this gave me details of all my sound cards and their devices:

    Code:

**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI]
    Subdevices: 0/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I cheated slightly here and disabled the integrated sound card on my motherboard. If you still have this enabled there maybe more listed from this command.

Next you must go and edit the pulseaudio config file /etc/pulse/default.pa

    Code:

    sudo nano /etc/pulse/default.pa

    find this section

    Code:

    ### Load audio drivers statically (it's probably better to not load
    ### these drivers manually, but instead use module-hal-detect --

Add this line after that comment:

    Code:

    load-module module-alsa-sink device=hw:0,3

    Notice that device=hw:0,3 correspond to:

card 0: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI]

This should give you audio, not at the login screen but straight after a valid logpn.

***This still didn't work until I disabled Audio in BIOS.***
Now when I run aplay -l I get this:

    bill@Ubuntu-A7DA-S:~$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: HDMI [HDA ATI HDMI], device 3: ATI HDMI [ATI HDMI]
    Subdevices: 0/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

Now I have the proper ATI driver and screen resolution, a working Flash player and HDMI sound and all it took was most of the afternoon.

Damn I'm getting too old for this.

sorry to hear you had a hard time of it, electric bill. i avoid situations like that by building computers that are all around linux friendly. (no intel or ati) for me, jaunty has been the best OS i've ever used. not 1 single problem. then again, i am a genius and think of these things ahead of time. (i can't expect everyone to)

btw, the ati and intel issues are not ubuntu specific. i know fedora and mandriva both have the same issues.

I don't know. 3 of my laptops have intel graphics and they all work FABULOUSLY. They can't play 3d games, but then, the graphics on them weren't designed to be able to. Simply not powerful enough to attempt to do 3d. As long as you accept that, I've found that Intel graphics have become VERY good, and work great with Linux anymore.

    Re: anyone try ubuntu 9.04?

I've seem to have a decent experience with my Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/GMS, 943/940GML Express video card on my laptop. Yes some 3D games wont work (Doom III for example), but many many others do work, and work well.

But like TLMiller said, its not designed to be a gaming machine. And Gaming is just a small portion of the computer industry.

The biggest problem I have with this video card, is a crash that this driver will cause if I'm running Compiz. Resizing a window with the mouse will cause it to crash almost instantly.

    Re: anyone try ubuntu 9.04?

I knew coming in that there would be issues especially with trying the new file system and using an ATI card but in the end it was all worth it.

My AX78 with Intrepid 64-bit was using the ATI 9.3 driver after having issues with the recommended Ununtu driver.
I was also using a Beta Flash player since the Firefox version was downright awful.
I still had problems when watching a program on Hulu.

This installation on the A7DA-S is as good or better when watching Hulu than it is when I boot to my Vista Ult 64 drive.
It boots from a cold start in about 30 sec & Compiz also seems to be working without any issues.
And here's the real miracle - for the first time (for me) Google Earth is actually working with an ATI card.

I was going to post something saying basically the identical thing.

Yeah, I don't run compiz myself, and can't remember the last time I had a driver crash for my Intel graphics.

    Re: anyone try ubuntu 9.04?

Yeah I sorta cheated. I had Compiz run on Gnome and now I've switch to KDE. I feel much more at home in KDE so I kept it on Gnome just to test it out every so often. I keep hoping that a patch has fixed it. Many people have been reporting the same error. So I was hoping for some progress so I could eventually put it on KDE. But a last the issue as be pushed off to the actual Intel driver its self that's where it ended.

god bless anyone that can get kde to play nice. i actually tried to like it, as i don't mind eye candy. but compiz and plasmoids were a nightmare for me. in gnome, i just change the theme to something snazzy and call it a day. compiz, dual screens, and everything else runs perfect. in the end, that's all i want is a stable, fast computer.

I plan on upgrading tonight after work. Kinda scared to try upgrading my HDD from EXT3 to EXT4. I'm going to do a fresh install of course, but I do have a separate partition for /home that I would like to keep in place.

i've been using ext4 for 2 months now without any problems. just keep your stuff backed up and don't worry.

the speed increase is well worth it to me. i hope you are also going with 64bit. ext4+64bit blazes new trails.

Did you start with a fresh ext4 format, or convert from ext3 to ext4?

    Re: anyone try ubuntu 9.04?

I installed it(fresh install), so far I'm liking it except for two problems I'm having.

    1. It seems that loading and viewing PDF files is really slow for some reason now.

    2. whenever I click on Places in the Gnome menu then any of the options for Home, Desktop, Documents, etc etc It loads up Rythembox.

Any ideas about those problems? Especially number 2.
