Slow read speed with Intel SSD

I have a Dell laptop XPS M 2010 and just bought a Intel SSD.
The read speed should be 250MB/sec and I'm only getting 110-115MB/sec. Spent many hours with Intel tech support and they don't know. This is my second SSD from Intel because I thought the first one wasn't working properly, the new one they sent, same thing. Dell says the XPX M 2010 supports 250MB/sec, the chipset I have is: Mobile Intel(R) 945GM/GMS/940GML Express Chipsets or Intel(R) 945GT Express Chipset. Any help would be highly appreciated. My e-mail address is: BoJ.Fenner@MunitechMotorcars.com
    Speed checked with HD Tune
I do have the latest drivers.

Let's move this over to the storage forum.
You might check out the forum also, there are a few posts on the intel ssd already.

this is a known flaw with ssd's of all varieties.

read that, it's really long but very interesting and you'll have a good understanding of why your drive gets slower and what will likely fix it in the future.

basically you're gonna have to wait for win7 or for intel to create an app to perform the TRIM command itself.

i don't know it well enough to explain it myself, plus there's a lot to explain, but that article will get you up to speed.

I was reading the article when it came out. It talks about how the SSD can degrade over time. In my case I have a brand new one that does not go beyond 120MB/sec. Thank you, Bo

have you tried the erase program? i forget the name, but it will set the drive back to it's peak performance.

depending how you use it, it may not take long to degrade.

    Brandito,
No I didn't try that yet. Now here's my question: When I received the second SSD from Intel, I formatted and ran HD Tune, there was not even an OS on the SSD and I got the same reading speed. I don't get it.
Thank you for your time, Bo

Re: Slow write speed with Intel SSD

Are you running it in ahci mode ?
Maybe if it is running in "ide compatible" the controller may peg it at udma6 which is max of 133mb/s.????

    To CMB:
I have no settings in the BIOS for AHCI, I can only choose in BIOS between:
    1)"RAID Autodetect/ATA"
2)"RAID On-SATA is configured on every boot"
I attached a screenshot of my device manager which is the setting "RAID Autodetect" in BIOS.
I also cannot change the ultra DMA mode 5 exept to PIO.

Thank you for your time, Bo

PS: the read speed of the SSD is the same when attached as a single drive in my laptop or RAID ON or RAID Autodetect.

Re: Slow write speed with Intel SSD

    Udma5 is 100mb/s.
It looks like you are running your drive in an ide compatibility mode, so that's what is limiting your speed.
Probably not an issue with the drive but the laptop/bios.
Not familiar with your laptop, I'll see if can find anything on it.
What drivers are showing under the ata channel 0 ?

    CMB,
thank you for taking the time to slove this problem. I really appreciate it.
    ATA Channel 0: Provider-Microsoft. Date-06/21/2006. Version-6.0.6001.18000
When I try to update it, it says " Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date".
    Thank you, Bo

Re: Slow read speed with Intel SSD

So you have 2 drives, one with the os on it and a second sst drive currently with nothing on it ?
It will boot up with either setting....raid autodetect or raid on.?
If you boot it up with raid on, how does the device manager look? Still showing udma5 ? Which driver is showing with raid on ?
Can you update the driver with the raid on setting ?

    CMB,
here is the device manger with RAID On in BIOS:

    http://munitechmotorcars.com/XPS~M2010/ATA~RAID~On.jpg

It only shows the CDrom on channel 0, the other IDE channel is blank??? What happened there?
I tried to update the drivers again, same thing as before.
The driver are the same with RAID On.
The SSD is with the OS, the second drive is a WD for storage.
I also tried just the SSD as only drive, with RAID On and with Autodetect settings in BIOS, same speed with every setting.
CMB, thank you again for your time, Bo

Click on the actual drive in device manager and see what detais it's showing when you have setting raid on.
Do you have intel matrix storage manager loaded ?

Re: Slow read speed with Intel SSD

CMB, I don't know if it's important but I noticed that my device manager still shows my old T7200 2.0GHz processor that I changed to a T7600 2.33GHz. It's strange.
