    Do DSL modems go Bad?

I have a Westell B90-36R516-01 modem, the ready light loses the signal every 5 minutes but comes back, then the light stays on but the internet drops out completely after 20 minutes and does comeback on until I power down for 20 minutes. The system is now AT&T. The whole system is hooked up to a Dlink DIR-655. Any suggestions appreciated.
    Thanks

Maybe just a soldered point gone bad and gotten loose ...

If it 's out of warranty, I would unplug it and open it up and do a visual search for loose connections (like the solder points) / look first at the regions with connectors to the outside world (like the mains or adapter input socket and such)

Did a lot of repairs like that in my younger days

Re: Do DSL modems go Bad?

I killed a Westell 6100 last year when the power went down.
There were storms in the area and although the weather in my immediate vicinity was fine I was still affected.
Pissed me off since the DSL modem, the phone modem and the router were on a UPS.
At the time I was using Verizon VoiceWing digital phone service so I lost that too.

I called Verizon on my cell and they shipped me one the next day.
The guy said it was out of the warranty period but they would replace it anyway.

I told him that I wanted to buy a spare and he said it would cost $50 and be charged to my account.
The spare came in 2 days and they never charged me for it.
It's all set up in bridged mode so I'm ready for another emergency.

I've had at least one Motorola Surfboard cable modem go bad. I can see the same thing happening to a dsl modem.

Yes it's possible although however undesirable I find it to be.

The damn thing has been on now 2.5 hours and no drops in service, I called AT&T today $61.00 including shipping for a new modem. It's got me wondering if this is bad or it's a line problem with the DSL.

We, here in Belgium, have a system where the ISP provides not only the account, but also the hardware needed to operate it.
It 's all included in the price and when anything goes bust, it will get swapped with a new unit and tested again ...
Even the extra switch that was needed in my LAN was placed without costs.
( it 's all part of the push for more customers by competing ISP's )

So, no unplanned costs. They come to your house and fix and/or replace things, even cables.

Pretty much the same deal in rural Arizona with Frontier Net. My brother's DSL modem was dropping packages and they replaced it free. They consider it "rented" hardware.

Indeed, that 's what it is; it stays their property although they leave it in the house when you move / I guess it 's too quickly out-dated
