    HTPC(?) Proposal...or Another Wild Hair

Okay time for another wild hair that will hopefully get me off my ass and get the balance of my ‘puter builds finished.

Earlier this year I ended up changing a lot of builds which has left me with more spare parts than I want the wife to keep reminding me about.

Anyway the wild hair is another build that MIGHT just work with the wife. She has several shows on TV that she faithfully watches and a lot of activities are planned around them. So I’m about to propose to her that if certain parts don’t sale how about using them to build a VCR eerrrr……..HTPC(?). This will have to be done will a minimum of cost or trading. So here is what I have and would like suggestions if this stuff would work and what else I need. This will be a simple record and watch setup.

Case: TBD (have the one left over from Kermit the Folder)
    Mobo: Abit AN-M2HD LE (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813127036)
CPU: Brisbane 4000+ or Opteron 1210
HSF: Stock Brisbane, Zalman CNPS7500 or 8000
    Memory: 2 x 1024 (F2-6400PHU2-2GBHZ or OCZ2P800R22GK)
    GPU: On board 7025PV
    Sound: On board through HDMI
    HDD: OS >> 74GB Raptor
    Storage >> 250GB, 400GB, or 2 x 400GB SATA

I guess that leaves me needing a tuner card correct? This will not be OTA but cable hook up.

    So there you have it!

    Operating system?

I use a Hauppauge 1800 PCI-E. Excellent card that does OTA HD and NTSC, cable, and QAM. The 1600 is the PCI version.

Be careful with the card and the case you buy. Some cases are low profile.

    Hello All,

Jedi do you have all this stuff now? Why don't you get it built and leave the tuner card for last.

    PS already in the case?

Get her built, then ask permission for the remaining parts.

Not sure that'll work as our "discussions" have gone down hill on the idea of multi computers. So the thought is to make her want to do something and then have me build it for her.

Sure it will. but Win 7 RC is a really slick media center. It setup my 1800 great out of the box, populated my channel list, downloaded guide, etc.... Use it while it's free!

The only downside is that records files in a format called .wtv which no other programs seem to able to read.

The reason I asked, is because if you use Linux, some tuner cards are not well supported.

Okay thanks m_r! Could you explain that part a bit more...as in "what other programs"?

On the tuner side what would be the advatage of going with the 1800 (pci-e) over the 1600 (pci)? Also have a "generic" M$ media center hand held unit......would that work for something? Or just try for a tuner card that comes with one?

1800 and 1600 are the same. The new HP card is the 2250 I believe.

VLC, xbmc, gb-pvr can't read .wtv files

Try the remote with Win 7. It seems pretty flexible. You can always buy another remote later.

Re: HTPC(?) Proposal...or Another Wild Hair

Okay 'nother noob question....now that raider has suggested the 1600/1800 what would be a good "dual" channel card that would allow recording two programs at the same time?

Hauppauge makes A1 stuff! Good choice. I've had it with ATI theatre cards and spotty driver support.

That is a nice card if you still need analog support. I have an Avermedia 780 which also works very well. I am about to order the new Avermedia Duet, it has 2 digital ATSC/QAM tuners, but no analog, which I dont need anyway. And it is $59 at Newegg.

Yep read your post after my order became "non-cancelable"! No I don't need analog but oh well........
