Let us know of any/all quirks/glitches/problems that may show up using the drive. Seagate is good stuff but I've been seeing/hearing of a few problems with the .12 models.

I don't remember any specific or unusual problems, just the general gamut. The problems started in the .11 series with a few making their way into the .12 models. Either model series is of only average performance so make sure that is ok with you as well before taking the chance. I'd definitely choose something else if you're looking for a boot drive.

that is the problem ,( going to put this on a old epox board I have collecting dust ) I dont see many drives under 50 bucks that get reviews worth a crap
or if you do find one , say in a 160gb range , it usally some slow piece of crap drive . Everything is about space, space , and more space ( unless you get into a volciraptor) I read some good things on these drives so I will just cross my fingers and if it dont do what it is suposed to do (defective) then I will just RMA it to new egg

Re: seagates new Barracuda 7200.12 500GB drive

My counter part at another location asked me about some latency issues the drives from seagate where having as he has purchased several of the 12's. I remeber they had some issues with firmware, but he researched it and said the forums at seagate are full of issues as of late about this, and firmware did not help it. I believe he mentioned soemthing about some quality control issues from the manufacture of the drives, like getting contaminated with dust and such.
Hope you luck out, as we are planning on steering away from them for a bit, even though I liked there 250 and 320 drives, pretty fast.

I have used Seagate for the last 10 years and those were the only 2 I ever had go bad.

the new ones they sent me seem to be working OK.

I would have to pull them and check but I am sure they are the .12s

I don't have any of the old drives so I am not sure what the firmware number was on them.

I really have nothing to compare the speed to.

Not to admit being a dummy but I just accept the fact that they get the job done and have never really considered the speed.

They're about average in STR performance relative to other drives in the 500GB 7200 rpm class. Should be a nice mass storage drive provided the glitches have finally been worked out of them. Sorry but I have no personal hands-on experience with them.
