Re: seagates new Barracuda 7200.12 500GB drive

This drive lasted me about 3 months and cost me $1200 (data recovery). Granted I should have had the thing backed up (I have a ludacris backup system now). However I wasnt expecting it to die so friggin fast. Apparently the firmware on it went corrupted. According to the guy I talked to with the data recovery place I used its becoming more and more common with Seagate as they continue to make their firmware more and more complicated and at the same time more prone to failures. I also had the unfortunate issues with firmware on my 1.5tb seagate too.

The RMA'd 500 and the updated 1.5tb have been working good for the last few months now but I wont be buying seagate again. I decided to use them since they bought out Maxtor and I loved Maxtor drives. Anyway I hope you have better luck than I did, but be prepared.

A pair of almost any two drives in a mirror is cheaper than any DRS I can think of.

I installed a Seagate 7200.12 1.5tb drive in a friend's build quite a while back. So far she's not had any problems with it, and she's never even bothered to apply the firmware fix for it.

Good for her. NOW, if someone would fix her up with a sensible backup method and strategy for using it, she'll be that much better off!

My understanding is that it is the larger models in the .12 series but I'm not 100% sure on that.

wonder how a pair of these would do in raid 0

edit : I also am pondering 4 of these in raid zero .

    general question :
In raid zero 2 disks vs 4 disks is their any speed benifit ?
yes I know if one drive fails then I am screwed ! LOL
