Use that velociraptor as the boot drive no matter what. Lemmee know when your benches are ready and I'll put mine up for comparison

Re: seagates new Barracuda 7200.12 500GB drive

I really have nothing to compare the speed to.
Well, that is no longer true. I installed an OCZ 120 SSD today.

I am still trying to decide if I am impressed or not.

Bootup is not a lot faster which really surprised me but everything else seems to be faster (file transfers, web page loading).

It will be a few days before I can get any games loaded to see if there is a difference with them.

Run HDTach or HDTune on the SSD, then post the pics of the results here, please.

Both look as I expected. Seagate has very nice STR (actually a little smoother than that in real life) but slower than average access time.

The SSD's numbers speak for themselves - virtually 0 access time and a flat STR curve. Why its so bumpy is interesting though. Would have looked better tested with the other block size selected in HDTach. No problems indicated though

That's better. TBH though, I wonder why HDTach would still look raggedy like that on a SSD. Can't think of a logical reason for it. But the results reacted to the setup change in the normal way, as expected. No problems indicated. My curiosity keeps growing......

Re: seagates new Barracuda 7200.12 500GB drive

This afternoon I sat there and run the program a dozen times. I was surprised at each run. Some looked much worse that the one I posted and some looked much smoother.

I have never been much of an expert on HDDs so have no real explanation for it.

I had some doubts about the drive when I bought it, so paid an extra $30 and bought the Instant Replacement warranty my local store offers. Figured if something drastic happens I might lose a bit of data but will get a new drive out of the deal anyway.

When I first started working with the drive I had a hard time getting the OS on it. I tried to clone my old drive and that would not work at all. I finally did a clean install that took for ever. That was the one that I thought booted a little slow. I finally reformatted and reinstalled and everything seems to be working better so the drive is looking up.

Good Good. I guess we're all a bit whacko to expect today's latest and greatest to drop in and go without a hitch somewhere. I mean, when a radical change in the underlying tech takes place this this one. Well, look at this way, ya got it done, its working, everyone learns from it, and you get the credit for it. Not too shabby

Re: seagates new Barracuda 7200.12 500GB drive

I got the drive installed , I am trying to save the results in HD tach but keep getting "access violation" error

The seagate is whooping my volciraptor in sequencial read speeds

volci gets a average read speed of 106 mps
    the seagate gets 111.6 mps
    randon access is 14.0 ms

btw I am testing the drive with nothing on it I am scratchin my head how a 49 dollor drive is faster in read speeds then a 180 dollor drive

if some one wishes I can email the files that HD tach made

I don't know what's up with that. Might wanna check the reaad/write permissions.

Something not right there. I'm sure the diff is small, and it isn't really significant anyway, but the rappy's utterly superrior access is shining through. I'll trade STR for access time any day of the week.

randon access is 14.0 ms average for 7200 rpm, but still sucks

    Here's what my velociraptors do.

Remember though, it isn't really fair at all to compare a Velociraptor to ANY 7200 rpm disk, period.

Got'em both but don't have anything to open the HDC files.
