    quick question regarding q6600 overclock

ive overclocked my q6600 to 3.0 on my 680i LT motherboard (im running a zalman cnps9900 on the cpu). all the cpu core temperatures are fine (40 degrees) except my friend told me that the SPP/MCP readings from everest (which are the front/south side bus temperatures) are too high at 65 degrees.

he said if i run it too long it will kill my motherboard. im not sure if this is true or are these normal fsb temps that people get with the 680i boards.

thanks in advance for the help.

Run CoreTemp instead, see what it says. My Q6600 runs 3.5 Ghz 24/7 without the slightest hiccup. Temps stay under 60C for the most part. Bear in mind, and this is just my experience with these chips, the lower the default Vcore (VID) the better they usually overclock.

with core temp right now all the 4 cores are idleing around 35 (3.0 overclock), core temp doesnt show me the fsb temperatures though, which is what my friend was saying the problem was. do i have to pay any attention to that (temperature of fsb), or do i only look at the temps of the 4 cores?

There is no FSB temperature reading as far as I know. That would be from the northbridge anyway, not the CPU.

All of my rigs run folding 24/7/364 so the slightest instability or other problem has virtually NO chance of slipping by. Just watch the 4 individual core temp readings displayed by core temp. If they hit over 75 or so, back down the FSB, Vcore, maybe both. Use GOOD cooling. For my money, that means Thermalright. Good luck mate.

sorry my mistake, you are right, it is the northbridge reading (i mistaked the fsb for northbridge) the individual core temps are fine, i purchased a zalman cnps9900 a few days ago which is why i am overclocking atm. so the northbrdige temperature does not matter as much i presume?

you should see reboots at least after a while..try to prime/superpi it and see how long it lasts. if you want to invest in cooling you may look at http://www.enzotechnology.com/

NB temps won't normally get as high as the CPU cores do so I really don't think there's anythig to worry about. NB coolers are made for the chip so you can go that route if ya like. Your overclock is relatively mild so I don't think you have anything to worry about provided you have good through-case airflow. Forgive my manners!! Welcome to the forums

    thanks for the welcome

i ran prime yesterday with no crashes. i was just worried because my NB temperatures (60degrees) were alot higher than my cpu core temps (35 degrees), but yea since u guys saying thats all good then im contempt at 3.0ghz, im not a hardcore overclocker or anything lol.

That may be normal for your mobo. Not many of us have much experience with that make and model. You might try asking a mod to move the thread to the most appropriate mobo forum. May geet more feedback that way.

Most Q6600's will OC to 3.0 on stock voltage and stock cooling with no problem.

Re: quick question regarding q6600 overclock

I ran the exact same MOBO (latest BIOS update) and CPU (@ 400Mhz x 8 = 3.6Ghz) on my last rig. I ran 1.4815v vcore, 2.0v memory, and one step up from default voltage for the North and South bridge w/o a problem for almost two years until I invested in a new one.

CPU was watercooled but, all else was stock cooling.

you might just want to add a small fan over the NB heatsink (tie rap maybe ?)

Re: quick question regarding q6600 overclock

I personally had a EVGA 680i SLI (pretty similar I believe) and even with the Northbridge fan at 100% I do remember the SPP/MCP readings being rather high, but I ran it overclocked for 2 years without any sort of issues.

I heard some people say the stock thermal paste on the north/south bridge heatsinks are very poorly applied, so perhaps reapplying some ArcticSilver5 or something could help some if you are worried. I had replaced my tiny stock fan as well since I thought it was kind of noisy and that helped a bit as well.

Re: quick question regarding q6600 overclock

EVGA 680i's run VERY VERY hot. its normal. It used to really suck when i had my 8800gtx because it would make my northbridge overheat. High temps in the 60's were normal, in the 70's caused instability.
