Need assistance to set up wireless please

I have a Linksys G wireless router that I use for a firewall- nothing else.

I want to get an inexpensive laptop for my wife's birthday so she can use it in the family room to read emails and go on the web.

I have seen some $350.00 laptops, want to get something like this running XP no Vista for me.

Can I make this work with my Router? And what do I need to buy?

    TIA

You don't need to buy anything extra. New laptops should support wireless G out of the box. A few things you need to do are:
    • Set up WPA or WPA2 security (WPA2 doesn't work on all laptops)
    • make sure you change the admin password on the router
    • Prevent remote management of the router (so you need a LAN cable to modify the router settings)
You can do a few other things to secure your network but those things alone should do the trick. Instructions can be found in your router's manual - available online or on the CD. Also on Linksys routers, you can click the "More" button on each page of it's user interface.

    Hi
You say I need a "LAN Cable" to modify the router settings. I have my desktop running through the Router now, so that is what you are referring to correct?

OK First I have updated the firmware on the Linksys 54g 4.0.
I know how to change the admin passoword.

What is wpa and wpa2 and what should I set?
How so I prevent remote management of the router, I do have the router hard wired to my desktop only at this time.

My image host may be a bit slow. massive packet loss for some reason...

If your laptop etc has trouble finding the router you can enable the ssid broadcast. Your key can be anything but longer the stronger, a catch phrase maybe.
You can leave the mac filtering till after you have connected succesfully and then add the extra layer of security...

    hopw thats helpfull :-)

In a nutshell, it's a security protocol that encrypts your wireless network traffic. WPA2 offers more robust security, but it's also worth bearing in mind that some devices won't work using WPA2. If you reach that hurdle, drop it down to WPA. Leaving the other settings should be sufficient. From there all you need to do is add a security key. Make sure you remember what that key is 'cos if ever you have friends or family visiting and they want to connect their laptops, you'll need to give them that key.

Under the Administration section, you should see an option called something like "Wireless Access Web" or "Management via WLAN". Disable those to prevent access over the wireless LAN
"Remote Management" is another option worth disabling. It prevents people from being able to access the router from the WAN (Internet) side. If your router has the option to set a seperate password for remote access, it's probably a good idea to change that from the default password before disabling it.

    OK
I got everything set but I do not know what a WPA2 needs to be. Is this just a password I create with numbers and letters?
    Thanks for the assistance.
