    Installed security software, broke computer...

Hi - I foolishly attempted to boost my laptop's security software and it appears I've screwed it up instead...

The error is quite weird. My internet connection works fine whenever I restart, but after some time all my web browsers decide to stop working. They just start displaying the error message below:

"INTERNET EXPLORER CANNOT DISPLAY THE WEBPAGE.
    WHAT YOU CAN TRY:
    DIAGNOSE CONNECTION PROBLEMS" (doesn't help...)

What's weird is that my other internet-enabled programmes such as MSN work fine. It's only all the browsers (IE, Firefox, Chrome) that break down.

This happened after I installed the following security progs all in one go: AVG, Zone Alarm, CCleaner, Ad-Aware, JkDefrag, Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware, TuneUp 1-Click Maintenance & Utilities 2009.

I'm pretty sure the error stemmed from one of the latter three. Particularly the last, as when I first ran TuneUp Utilities - under the Health section - I was prompted to accept a recommended change to the browser network settings... something about disabling access by other computers (apparently a weakness which allows others to browse my folders by enterting something like {C in their URL bar?!? I wish I'd taken note properly...)

Anyway, that's all I know. If you guys could somehow help me work through this I'd be really grateful. It's not an apocalyptic error as I can always just restart, but I'm really curious to work out what the hell I did!

    Many thanks,

    M

PS PC is an Acer Aspire 8930G on a WiFi connection. And I'm fairly sure Zone Alarm isn't the problem as I haven't blocked anything through it yet.

UPDATE: Okay here's a potential clue? Websites which begin with httpS:// are working fine! I.e. https://www.emisaccess.co.uk ; my work's Outlook Web Access webmail site etc. So for some reason httpS:// sites are no problem, but all other websites fail. Wtf?!

    Hi, and welcome to PCPer

This sounds like a firewall issue to me - something blocking outbound destination port 80 (http). Check your firewall settings.

You should have restore points that were made during the installations.
You can try to go back till you find a time it was working.
