    How could AMD beat intel?

In your opinions what would it take for AMD to beat intel. Whats holding them back? Any opinions are welcome!

I just do not see how AMD is going to pull it off . I have been a amd fanboy for some time , but with lynnfeild I have to rethink this in light of windows 7 release . From what I am reading windows 7 will be optomised for Intel CPUs mainly core I5 and I7s with their turboboost and hyperthreading. From what I am reading , turboboost will scale up the most used cores and shut down the idle ones, add hyperthreading and with windows 7 and you have a real snappy system
AMD just can not compete. Also with AMDs pricing at $245 for the 965 then clearly the only real choice is Lynnfeild if one were building a new system. ( also the reason I am selling my amd rig)

What do you mean by beat? Intel pays more for paper then AMD can spend on research. AMD caught Intel napping with the K8, and as you have seen intel doesn't want it to happen again. Regardless AMD continues to push intel with well thought out parts. intel doesn't release a stream of brand new parts because it wants to. Much more profit in speed bumping your old ones.

yes but their is more to it then just games . I suspect that as windows 7 gets more mainstream , the software will catch up . I am talking multitrheaded apps and future games and that is where Intel has the advantage with turbo boost and hyperthreading . Intels cpus w/hp can work on 8 threads at once, or if a single threaded app needs more horsepower turboboost can up the cpu Mhz and make single threaded apps run real nice .
I alway have liked AMD but they just can not compete with these features .
Another thing Intel chipsets are known for stability, and their latest CPus tear up AMDs P2 in memory bandwith . AM3s bearly run any better on DDr3 .
It is just a no win for AMD

Re: How could AMD beat intel?

What it'll take for AMD to stomp intel is to come out with a many-core mainstream part with an equivelent to hyperthreading that gets all the use out of each core that it can, load up a bunch of cache onto it, and make it run cool.

Either that or do something crazy, like integrate a single processing core with its own RAM dedicated to the OS, with the CPU being an add in for user tasks.

Intel's two steps ahead of AMD still. I.E. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/22nm

Though it's about time for the balance of power to shift again. AMD dominated 2002-2006 with the A64 parts, Intel's been on top since. In the next year we should see AMD launch a good part.

I think AMD at some period of time will rise again! I have been a AMD fanboy for many years. I currently have a dragon platform system. I am very happy with it. In this economy though I have not had the money to buy $1000 CPU's and such. I am glad we got a good discussion going on. Keep the opinions coming.

What could beat Intel? They should be one step ahead with dieshrinks and have more cores in a cpu then Intel has. It doesn't matter if 1 core is slower when you run more then 1. Just look at ATI for proof.

Yep, but that's almost deceptive. Cost of running is almost as important as upfront cost.

Either way it boils down to cost. There is a point where the more you spend the less you get.

Actually AMD dominated since earlier then that with the original K7 CPUs ,Tbirds pwned P3s of the time, heck I remember durons that I had that were on par or faster then a P3 and they cost a third of the price.

Then intel realeased the P4 which was garbage and they based their whole marketing on "more mhz is better" when the truth is there were Athlons that would pwn a P4 even at slower clock speeds. And if you leveled out the playing field say a 2ghz athlon vs 2ghz P4 the Athlon would win and by a nice margin too.

Anyways, as far as how AMD could beat intel now. I have high hopes in bulldozer, especially if it can really run single threaded appz on all available cores, I think AMD calls it threadfusion or something. And with bulldozer being rumored 16 cores......
