    OC'ing Kermit v3.0 >> Biostar TA790GXE & PII X4 945

    Okay this basicly started here http://forums.pcper.com/showthread.php?t=468381 but decided to get the oc'ing thread also started in case I "find the cure".

    The system specs are:

    CASE: Ultra MX6
    PSU: OCZ OCZ700MXSP
    MOBO: Biostar TA790GXE mATX
    CPU: AMD PII X4 945
    HSF: Zalman CNPS8700-NT
    GPU: XFX GTX 260-216 Black Edition
    MEMORY: TWIN2X4096-8500C5D(2 x 2048)
    HDD: WD Raptor X, 150 Gigs

    Late Morning 12/14/09

    I managed an 8M run of SPi at 15 x 235 and then was able to boot up at 15 x 240. However if I try to start Prime anywhere above 220 - 225 it will BSOD. It was really driving me nuts until I decided to look more closely at cpuz. It appears that in bios I'm raising the vcore but when it comes to boot up it is still running "stock".

    Late night into early morning 12/14 – 15/09

    I've down loaded the overclocking utility and it will allow me to raise the vcore that way, but still at a loss as to how to get it done in the bios. Right now just for S & Gs I've bumped the vcore to 1.392v and ran Prime for thirty minutes before stopping at 15 x 240 for 3.6GHz......temps were in the mid to upper 40sC.

    In the wee hours of morning 12/15/09

    Okay played a little longer than I should using the Biostar overclocking tool. Reminds me of ClkGen.......any way after it had run a half hour at 15 x 240 = 3.6GHz thought I do some S & G stuff. Not sure what was accomplished other than to find out that 3.6 is pretty much it for "stability".

    Did manage a 4M run of SPi at

    Did the equivalent of a boot at

    Morning 12/15/09

    Tried Prime again at 3.6 but that was a major bust. Lowered it 3.57 while getting ready for work this morning. It ran two + hours before I left so left it and GPU folding running and will see if it is still running when I get home around midnight. Have an e-mail out to biostar so guess I'll just let it fold and work on something else until some new suggestions come along.

    Flashed the latest bios and that seems to have fixed the voltage issue! Now to find time to do an orderly overclocking thead!

    I use a notebook to track changes. I'm an old sk3wl pad-n-pencil OC'er.

    Forgot some general BS while using the Biostar OC utility........

    This was my last S & Gs "bootable"

    Before crashing and burning in the wee hours of this morning I started a Prime run at 3.67GHz but required the 1.488v vcore to not reboot. It lasted until I stopped it this morning after running 8 hours, and according to HWmon the cpu went as high as 58-59C in an open case.

    I use an excel spreadsheet to track the changes. Otherwise, I burn through paper like no tomorrow. Easier for me to read as well.

    Jedi,

    You overclocking through the BIOS or windows? If through windows, might want to give the AMD overdrive utility a shot; sometimes, there are even more options to fiddle with in there. Especially when it comes to RAM timings.

    Now that I can change the voltages in bios went back there. Hope by this weekend to get some specs up.

    Yesterday before crashing and burning (03:00ish) I started a Prime run at 3.67GHz but required the 1.488v vcore to not reboot. It lasted until I stopped it later after running 8 hours, and according to HWmon the cpu went as high as 58-59C in an open case.

    Will need to do some twiking as I didn't like the temps. It may be the technology but I think it kinda sucks this cpu is being bested or equalled by my 2 720s.

    Sadly I’ll have to rescale or crop the screenies as they were generated on a dell 24”. As soon as I get my act together, I list the settings in more detail.

    Oops, forgot to do an update with all the snit happening here and at work!

    Ended up flashing the latest bios and that seemed to fix the voltage issues (appears vcore wasn't the only one). Been doing some decent oc'ing so it is time to work on the oc thread and start posting. Also need to do a worklog thing for this supposedly "final" version of Kermit (v3.0???)

    However this is my current "stable" setting.......

    HT & NB Freq @ 1600
    Mem set at 800-5-5-5-18-24-2T
    15 x 244 = 3.66GHz
    vcore @ 1.44v / vdmm @ 2.1v
    Ambient room was 19-20C

    CPU max temp was 52C (interesting that +.04v would cause that much heat, then again the ambient might have been higher when I was running at 1.48v).

    I stopped it after 14 hours >>>

    Okay here is my attempt to list a more detailed version of my settings. The items marked with ** are open to suggestions and questions for an increase of performance.

    With the Biostar most of the oc changes were/are done in the T-Series subheading of the bios. The only other things I changed are:

    1. Under Advanced Cool N Quiet is disabled
    2. Other than that the other subheadings do not affect OC’ing or have been left stock.

    Under the T-Series

    1. Set to Manual

    2. CPU/HT Clock = variable

    3. CPU Config = Auto **

    4. CPU Tuning
    >> CPU V + varies (+0.150 )
    >> CPU-NB Over voltage + varies (+0.050 )
    >> Custom P-States = Enabled

    Life as usual has gotten in the way of doing things, but thought I'd leave y'all with a little bit until a more "detailed" post can be made.

    Have had to drop things down a bit, even though I had a 14 hour prime run at 3.66GHz. It seems that when I run prime and GPU folding to emulate "total utility" it would not survive anything beyound an hour or less. Temps didn't seem to be the issue but guess if the GPU needed to access the proc under certain conditions it'd bork.

    However I happy that I was able to do it at 3.6GHz and only need 1.44v to do it.

    HT & NB Freq @ 1600 (1920 oc'ed)
    Mem set at 800-5-5-5-18-24-2T (960 oc'ed)
    15 x 240 = 3.60GHz
    vcore @ 1.44v / vdmm @ 2.1v

    Have you tried lowering the NB to 1400 (1720 o/ced) to see if that fixes the issue, or lowering just the HT Link to 1720 to see if that helps too. Sounds like it's possible the IMC is causing some issues. Also, the ram @ 2.1V sounds awfully high for 960mhz. Might be fixing one problem and causing another.

    1. Not sure need to go find a screenie, thought I may have tried that. However it is possible I may have confused that with DC 3.0 settings as I was doing both at the same time!

    2. Factory voltage value. Been running all of my Dominator and G. Skills there.

    Can't find any screenies for 1400 Ratatat, but here are some from the "testing" I did earlier.........

    My uncontrollable shotgun testing continues and don’t have the foggiest to the when. While I was able to get some interesting values at 1.5+v vcore, my eventual goal was the highest with 1.44v. So here are some of the results of the oc’ing testing (used a mixed bag of SPi & HPi runs for “load”).…………

    From the most ridiculous (8M run of SPi)……..

    HT & NB Freq @ 1600 (2341 oc'ed)
    Mem set at 800-5-5-5-18-24-2T (1040 oc'ed)
    15 x 260 = 3.90GHz
    vcore @ 1.536v / vdmm @ 2.1v
    (Forgot to note my CPU-NB Over voltage [+0.100?] or HT Over Voltage [1.40?])



    To the more “acceptable”……..

    8M Run of HPi
    HT & NB Freq @ 1600 (2032 oc'ed)
    Mem set at 800-5-5-5-18-24-2T (1016 oc'ed)
    15 x 254 = 3.81GHz
    vcore @ 1.488v / vdmm @ 2.1v
    (Again forgot to note my CPU-NB & HT Over Voltage)



    8M Run of SPi
    HT & NB Freq @ 1600 (2040 oc'ed)
    Mem set at 800-5-5-5-18-24-2T (1020 oc'ed)
    15 x 255 = 3.827GHz
