Re: Need help choosing processor phenom II x4 820 2.8 VS core 2 duo e8400 3.0

510 is the price with the only upgrade being the phenon II 820 4x 2.8,

or i can pay 530 and get e8400 core 2 duo 3.0 with the same basic setup, 320 gig, 3 gig ram, win 7, same deal both with lowsier intergrated graphics cards(my next upgrade)

the amd offer is 200 off and the intel is 150 off

leaning towards the amd x4 until somebody tells me the e8400 is the better buy for what i need. the duo will use less wattage thats for sure

here's the link to the amd rig as base, though you have to go to processors and upgrade to the phenom which cost's an extra 10 buck

the intel unit, the ispiron 545 is the same price and cost 30 bucks to upgrade to the duo core 2 e8400 3.0

510$ and 530$, pretty respectable , will buy a graphics card afterwards

Notice the upgraded video cards available, a 4350 or GT220 which most likely the limots of what the PSU will support.

Also the system has 3 dimms, which doesn't work well with amd dual channel. Don't understand why they do this. Apparently intels can run with 3 but the 3rd has to be single channel. I don't even know if AMD's can do that at all,

Check HP they have the same $200 off, 4 dimms 640GB, 4000 series integrated free shipping for 530 with same processor.

Recently (but before the latest price drops) I got a high end gigabyte board, PII 945, nvidia 275 GPU and 4 GB of 1800 DDR3 for 500 bucks

    Good insight glassman
just wondering if your using US dollars because in canada we pay more for everything, even when the dollar is near par

i'll have to check out new egg none the less, canadian online wholesalers i've been looking at are selling win 7 for 150 and up. with those prices i could definitely build me a rig for my suiting, i'd probably go down to a 250 gig hardrive and try to upgrade the amd for something real badass

    thanks cud

so i'm looking on newegg canada and the cheapest case i see made by cooling master is 79.99. just an example of how canadians are raped by retailers, doesn't help that our greasy government holds back the CAD with their greasy policies and tell's canadians they want a low currency

I would get the AMD system, just based on the fact that the integrated graphics (3200) is far better than the Intel 3100.

Before you buy, search the net thoroughly to make sure that that Dell desktop can accept standard ATX PSU upgrades. You will most certainly need to upgrade the PSU and ther GPU.

this is a question and answer from a dell message board page

Hey everyone, I was just wondering if it was possible to upgrade the power supply in the Inspiron 546. Not the slimline model, the tower version. Thanks a lot!

    kevindubrow

For the Inspiron 546MT, you can use most generic standard ATX power supply units, with either a 24-pin or 20+4-pin main motherboard power connector, with or without the on/off switch.
You should be able to buy a compatible power supply from either a local or online computer store.

Note: You require a power supply with four SATA power connectors.
