    Question Setting advice?

I could use some memory timing and voltage setting advice on the system listed in my profile. I have it all setup on default/auto currently in the bios. I'm not using any oc apps or anything. I'm not worried as much about speed as I am stable and not damaging the sticks. I notice that their voltages are .3 different..Is this a problem? Seems fine now but I don't run it hard.

    Re: Setting advice?

Let me add that I have these arranged in the asus' four slots in the order they are listed above with the one Kingston 2G stick, a blank slot then the Muskin in the last two. Not sure if this is the best order or not either. Perhaps it would be better with the 2 sticks of Muskin first then the one 2G stick of Kingston?

i would set the timings to 5-5-5-15 and the vdimm at 2.0v.

then run memory86 overnight or while your at work.

    Thanks. I'll try that.

Any opinion on the way they're arranged? I thought this might have an effect on how they run dual channel.

go right ahead and reverse what you have. it's quite possible that it won't run dual with that mixture of sticks.

overall you won't notice single vs dual in everyday usage. the extra ram will be of more use to you than the speed.

i smoked one of my memory controllers on my 9850. oops it will only run single channel now. still works perfectly fine that way.

Thanks. I'm not too worried about it then. It's running alright so I'll leave it be there. I'm just wondering, in the interest of stability, could I just set everything back to auto except the voltage and leave that at 2.0?

    Re: Setting advice?

i'd leave the timings set to 5-5-5-15. the mushkin will run just fine at those timings.

    i would test with memory86.

    Thanks, will do.

Here's something. I have a little built in temp probe with my case and have the sensor stuck up in the chipset heatsink. That used to always read about 138-150 F. Since adjusting the timings and voltages it is now only 120! Odd..more efficient, I guess.

Possibly less work put on the chipset during memory intensive operations. Or, somehow the NB frequency was changed to a lower setting. Big drop either way, assuming all other factors are the same (cooling, ambient room temp, case temp).

    Re: Setting advice?

That's a lot like what I thought, ozzy983. I figured that the .3 V difference in Vdimm's was part of it. Also, it's just a cheapo temp sensor that comes with the Apevia case and has no good way to secure it so I just jam it in the heatsink. It's possible this variation was cause by that sensor shifting.

But I like to think my setting adjustments made the improvement.
