    I Think Im Back...

    Greetings Frogs,

Been a few years since ive logged in. But after I saw what happened with NEZ on slash i remembered the good old days of SETI. So Im back. Iraq kinda made me forget about it all.

Im set to move here shortly, but after the move ill break out my farm and see how well my old systems can do. (Now that i see GPU are being used that is.)

Well, hopefully my stats post soon, only started again yesterday.

Do you have any idea how HARD it is to remember a username and password you HAVNT used in over 4 years?!?

Anywho, lets get our gears together and pump out some wu!

Welcome Back! Seti is fun n' all, but if you get bored with it don't forget about all the other BOINC projects you can run.

    Re: I Think Im Back...

    Greetings,

I added Milkyway@Home to the list as SETI was running out of work to keep my 1 laptop busy. But for the most part, as long as together they can keep my system pumping, it works for me.

Hopefully SETI gets a nice chunk of work again and my computer can mainly focus there.

Side question: Anyone tried the NVIDIA Tesla C1060 or the AMD FireStream 9250 yet with distributed computing?

I haven't seen any hard specs on that card yet, but I expect that it wont perform significantly better than a good 2XX series when you account for the additional cost of the Tesla. Its more of an engineering card using server grade hardware. Hence you'll be paying a premium for additional guarantees and extra testing these cards go through.

But it would be nice to see some numbers though.

Oh yeah, Seti has regular outages every Monday for maintenance or something. Also, Seti and MilkyWay both have optimized CPU apps but I don't know how well they work if you're running GPU apps or if they can be mixed.

The FireStream 9250 is supposedly equivalent to the Radeon HD 4850. Here is someone using the Tesla card in Collatz. http://boinc.thesonntags.com/collatz...hp?userid=1692
It doesn't look that impressive to me, but of course I have no idea what factors are affecting it's use.

    Re: I Think Im Back...

    Greetings,

    True.

I emailed NVidia to try to get an understanding of the difference and they told me to look it up on their support page. (Which I did to begin with... before I contacted them.)

From my best understanding of the entire thing, Tesla C1060 does 933 GFLOPS where as the GTX 295 does 1700+. Tesla was supposed to have been designed for pure gpu computing and is "supposed" to be better and has twice the price.

Looking at SETI, the GTX 295 appears to do a WU in 10-15 minutes. Assuming I am reading this right. (http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/resul...mes=0&state=3).

At the moment it looks like I will go for some GTX 295's in late January to help out.
