    Pentium D 950 3.4GHz Dual Core Processor

Just had a relative retire to me their P4 D 3.4 dual core/ 3gb ddr3200 memory gateway rig with a Sony 22"Lcd and was wondering if this rig will play most the newer games out at the moment ? Should I keep this or buy my kids a new pc with newer cpu/board/mem I was hoping to just throw a cheap 9800 gt in to get by for a year or so. I know it will do everything else desktop related no with problem.

Considering the memory type is DDR1, that PC is based on 865/875 or 915 chipset (more likely the former).

If using 865/875, you will have to find an AGP based graphics card in order to play some of the latest games (there was an AGP 8800GS and HD3850). Otherwise if it's 915 based, then just toss in your 9800GT and it should be fine for gaming.

two things to bear in mind

1 most builders like them use a psu thats only just good enough for the box

2 they often also use none standard psu making an upgrade hard

after looking at all the components it seems its been upgraded from a P4 D 550 to the P4 D 950 and the power supply was also changed out about a year ago by me to a 550watt so i think ill be ok just adding in the 9800GT.

9800gt is fairly dated by today's standards. A 5750 or 5770 would be better IMHO.

^^^ I dont want to spend much on it Ill go $110 bucks or less on vid card. My boys wont play anything anymore demanding then what a 9800GT will play. They like their PS3 anyway for their serious gaming .
