    Velociraptor Firmware Update

This isnt new news, but I didnt find it in the searches, so I figured i'd post it since a lot of us own these drives.

if your drive was manufactured before late August 2009 then you probably still have firmware 0404V01
(you can check by going to device manager > drive properties > details tab > Hardware Id's in the dropdown list,
It will say your firmware version at the end of the underscores), you can upgrade to 0404V02.

The following is from Western Digital
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Current part numbers:

    WD3000BLFS-01YBU0
    WD1500BLFS-01YBU0
    WD740BLFS-01YBU0
    WD3000HLFS-01G6U0
    WD1500HLFS-01G6U0
    WD740HLFS-01G6U0

The new firmware version number is 04.04v02.

New part numbers (with this firmware version):
    WD3000BLFS-01YBU1
    WD1500BLFS-01YBU1
    WD740BLFS-01YBU1
    WD3000HLFS-01G6U1
    WD1500HLFS-01G6U1
    WD740HLFS-01G6U1

    Dear Valued WD Customer:

As a result of product evaluation consistent with Western Digital's quality
systems and our commitment to provide the highest quality products, an
update is being made to the WD VelociRaptor product family.

    Description of Change:

Performance enhancement: Sequential read and write
Compatibility enhancements: Double status FIS, TLER timer and counter synchronization

These changes do not affect the form or fit of the drive but do positively
affect the function of the drive.

    Details of Firmware Changes:

Performance improvements to sequential read and write:
Firmware release includes a function to allow the drive to stay in the
sequential mode if there was no other activity. This particularly benefits
    certain SATA RAID environments.

    Double status FIS:

The drive sent two status FIS (C001h and 5001h) after COMRESET.
Although the drive behavior did not violate the SATA specification it still
created issues for some SATA host bus adapters. This firmware will only
post 5001h when the drive is ready.

    TLER:

Corrected an issue where after 49 days of continuous operation the drive
could falsely report an error to the Host. This issue does not result in data
loss and only occurs once every 49 days of continuous operation and only
if a read/write operation is in progress when the counter rolls to zero. The
new firmware resolves this issue but as an alternate workaround, the drive
can be power cycled before 49 days elapses to avoid the potential error.

    Field Update Utility/Binary available July 24, 2009.
Manufacturing Implementation Date: August 21, 2009

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

The firmware update is mainly for those of us using them in RAID, but it wont hurt if you're using them as stand alone's

The upgrade can be downloaded from here.

The upgrade can be implemented and it WILL NOT destroy any information stored on the drive.

    Process:
    1. Create a bootable floppy or usb key and copy the file to the bootable media

    2. Shut down your computer and disconnect all your drives except for your velociraptor
(if you have more than one they must be done one by one)

    3. Boot to the floppy/usb key

    4. in the command prompt type in 0404V02.exe and press enter

    -=The upgrade will occur automatically=-

    5. Once complete, shut down the computer and plug your drives in again

    6. Boot up to normal, and windows will detect the drive again and you're done.

this picture is all I could find showing the update. It didnt work for this user, but it updated my 2 velociraptors without a hitch.
It will show '..........' as it updates the firmware where in the picture it says "Drive update not applicable"

This is one of my updated Drives (MFG July 24th 2009, came with 0404V01)

    Re: Velociraptor Firmware Update

How do you do the firmware update with a raid 0, if you can only do one disk at a time.

Or can you do them one at a time without taking a chance of breaking the array?

    Re: Velociraptor Firmware Update

switch to ahci mode and just have one pluged in at a time, then force bootmenu and boot off the usb key that has the update. (Asus boards use F8 before post so you dont have to manually change boot up order in the bios). Once update is done to your first drive and you're back at the prompt, hit the power button, unplug the sata connector to the drive you just updated, plug in the second sata connector back into the drive you first unplugged (the one that still needs to be updated), and redo the update process for the other drive.

Once you're done the updating and shut down again. Plug the sata connector back into your first updated drive, turn the system on, go into the bios, set it back to RAID mode. Your system will detect the array info on the drives, and it'll be like you never touched them in the first place. When windows boots, it'll redetect the drives and update its metadata because of the change from 0404V01 to 0404V02. Restart once, and Its done.

Thats what I did with my 2 1500HLFS, not a problem in the update at all and the RAID array was fine.

    Re: Velociraptor Firmware Update

Unfortunately I have to report that I succesfully upgraded my four WDC WD1500BLFS-01YBU0 drives to firmware version 04.04V02. However after 49+ days uptime one of these drives was again reported as a faulty in my raid configuration. So to me it seems that the new firmware does not fix this issue. At least not for this drive type.

odd, since the update i ended up replacing one about a week after (mechanical failure) and the new one had 4.02 already on it, so no update neccessary. They have been going steady since, 90+ days already, no errors.

what controller are you using for your raid?

I am mainly using software raid in linux. Recently I received another firmware update from WD version 0404v05. I have now upgraded my drives to this FW version and now I just have to wait another 49+ days to see if this issue is fixed or not.

    Re: Velociraptor Firmware Update

Firmware 0404v05 is for HP OEM velociraptor drives. Its the same as 0404v04, but with a fix for a bug that would cause a smart error in HP systems.

    Changelog for 0404v04:
    Enhancements:
    - Adjusts drive background maintenance processes to improve field reliability.
    FIXES:
    - Fixes an incorrect interaction that occurs with a certain host controller (timing-related).

    V05 OEM HP adds:
    - Fixes a miscounting of correctable errors (in firmware 04.04V04) that could cause erroneous drive failure predictions via the SMART mechanism. (which also seems to happen while in an HP system.... just makes you wonder)

The performance and raid reliability hasnt been changed since v02.

prebuilt iso contains both 0404v02 and 0404v04, just burn and boot

there is also a 0404v08 that is only for IBM OEM drives, but this came out the same time as the 0404v02 and is integrated into the IBM SAS HDD Update 1.06, but will not flash on any drive that isnt IBM OEM.

    Re: Velociraptor Firmware Update

Anyone know the command line switch to force the update.

I've got a WD5000YS that someone flashed with the WD4000YS firmware so I can only see 400gb on a 500gb drive. I run the update (which is identical to the Raptor update) but it says the drive is already updated. Anyone got any ideas?
