    4 or 8gb?

Hey guys, if I double upon my RAM do you think I'll see a noticable performance increase?

for general pc usage like web browsing, email, flash, probably not.

gaming you might, depending on the game

i doubled up a while back before ddr2 prices shot up, it was too cheap not to though, if the price is right i say why not.

Generally having more ram is better, if you enjoy watching high def matroska video's with vlc player then you wont have the sluggishness when you're deep into the movie and you start running other tasks.... they still havent fixed the memory leak that causes your ram to fill up (though taskman still reports it as around 65mb).

Whats a memory leak and are you refering to the Memory manufacturer when you say "they" haven't fixed the memory leak?

Memory leak is when a program doesn't clean up after itself and keeps eating more and more memory but not really using it, so a program may have 800 megs of memory reserved but only be using 2.

Max your board while you can. Memory gets expensive when it's the old technology. DDR2 you want as many 2GB modules as your board will hold.

Edit: Yes and no on the performance increase. If you don't run anything while you're gaming, no. But if you want to run steam, xfire, an IM program, etc in the background, more RAM means everything stays faster.

Depending on your system you may have to relax the timing specs on the memory to run 8GB. I bought some Mushkin 996657 (No longer Available) that my MB really likes (until I put in the X6 1090T) and I was able to run at 7-7-7-20 with them. I can't say that I have really seen any big difference. But at the time the price was right so I went for it.

    I just went from 4 gb of ddr3 1600 running at 1333 9-9-9-28 1t to 8 gb of ddr3 1333 (rated at 7-7-7-20, but running in 9-9-9-28 2t), and the main thing I notice:

botting from hibernate is almost instant, time from windows password to load is about 25% faster, editing audio/video is a lot quicker. No noticeable game performance difference.

extra ram shouldn't effect hibernate too much, that's more dependent on the speed of your hdd.

not sure if it is the timings or the amount, but it definitely has had an effect. prior it would take anywhere from 5 to 7 seconds for the monitor to turn on and show log-in screen after clicking the mouse, now, its around 1-2.

that sounds more like sleep mode.

    sleep mode is disabled.

nvm, apologies, it wasn't hibernate. I confused that with hybrid sleep.

    THAT was faster.

Opening more then one game at once will affect a lot more then just your RAM....
