EliteGroup GeForce 9400 GT pci express

I have an EliteGroup GeForce 9400 GT pci express graphics card which I've been using for about a year and it was working fine until today. There is no longer any display on my monitor when connected directly through the graphics card. Can I assume that the card is completely broken? Otherwise, has anyone any ideas?

Have you ruled out the monitor and cable being broken? Try it on a different computer to make sure!

If the card has two ports, try it on the other port.

If your monitor accepts analog input, try hooking it up to the VGA port, or use a DVI-VGA adapter to hook it up.

After doing this, start an RMA, it's the graphics card.

I have tried the monitor on a different computer as well as through the onboard graphics and it works fine.

The monitor has what I am pretty sure are VGA and DVI ports which have both been in use. The monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 2033sw.
The card has VGA (15-Pin D-Sub), S-Video and DVI (dual link) connectors.
Sorry, I don't know what RMA means.

Any other suggestions?

The graphics card fan is still fanning away, but it is no longer showing in list of attached hardware.

Can I just check: you used the graphics card on another computer and it worked? If that is so, did you use the same monitor and cable? If you did not, try the same monitor and cable. If it doesn't work now, try each of those two in turn. If you did use the monitor and cable from your current system and it does work, see the next bit.

If you reach the point where you have checked everything except the base unit, then that's where the fault is. But try the other working monitor and cable on your base unit just to check. If it's the base unit, but guess is that the motherboard isn't swapping correctly from onboard graphics to plug-in graphics. If I'm understanding your second post correctly.

I tried the monitor with other computers (not the graphics card) and it worked. After discussion with others, I was advised that it seemed the card had died. I just went out and bought a new ASUS ENGTS250 card which I am having even worse luck with. Not happy.

I plugged the new card in, turned the computer on, and again no display. Only this time, I get a fantastic noise. Like a really noisy hot water tap in an old house.

I am stuck.

I didn't plug the card directly into the PSU because the cable confused me - 6pin PCI (only 5 pins active) leading to 2 Molex connectors. Can I plug a PCIe (both ends) cable directly from my PSU to the graphics card, or will this likely destroy things further?

The PSU is a Master atx 650wt.

I assume you are talking about a modular PSU? If so, the PSU end of the cable is actually a little different from PCI-E power connectors. If the flying end of the lead is marked "PCI-E" then yes, you can use it.

And sorry, it looks like I miss-read your earlier post. If you haven't tried the card in another machine, you should do so.

Ok. Here is how things are now. I have fully connected my new card. The display is good. I have tried playing a few games and the card doesn't give up at all with tricky parts. The slight problem now (and I imagine it was all along) is that when I boot up, the monitor only sometimes gives a display. I probably only get a display on the monitor a quarter of the times I boot up. Any ideas with this one?

Dumb question, but what happens if you put the old card back? Does that never work still, or occasionally work like the new card?

Make sure you disable the onboard graphics in the bios when using one of the cards.
