Seagate Momentus-XT, where is the desktop version?
I'm kind of surprised that this revolutionary new drive debuts for laptops. I know its entirely possible to put it in a desktop as well, but I dont understand why there isn't a desktop variant.
I'm really considering getting it, but I dont know if I should hold out for the competition or a desktop variant. Couldn't those be faster since they have less restrictions?
Re: Seagate Momentus-XT, where is the desktop version?
I won't conjecture regarding the future of hybrid drive technology. I think Seagate designed this specifically as a notebook drive because the assumption is that most desktop builds will opt for an SSD for the boot drive & a large, cheap HDD for storage. In the notebook form factor, this drive provides plenty of space & increased performance without the need for adding a second drive.
I'm with you, however. I am interested in this drive for my new desktop build, but it's because of budgetary rather than size restrictions. The only SSD's in the same price range as the Momentus-XT are 30-40GB. I know you could get buy with that as a boot drive, but I get size-related anxiety at the thought of having a C drive that small. With the Seagate, I could install the OS & all of my programs on the same drive & use the WD Caviar Black 1GB that I already have as a storage/backup drive.
