    do cat 5 cat 6 all used the same type of ethernet port?

    RJ45 or also known as 8P8C. Most modular plugs and sockets you'll find on the shelves are CAT5e. If you want to wire your house up with CAT6 stuff and stick to CAT6 spec, you'll need to specifically seek out CAT6 components when you buy them.

    but cat 6e will work with the older stuff, right?

    Yeah it does. CAT6 & CAT6a (no such thing as CAT6e). I assumed that this was in relation to the other thread you made re: cabling and was saying that if you were trying to make a network that meets CAT6 spec, you'd need all CAT6 components (or higher) - cable, jacks and mod plugs. You can still plug CAT5, CAT5e and CAT6a stuff in to the same sockets or use CAT6/CAT6a cables with older equipment.
