    Did you know (Ubuntu 10.04)

    .

    just ran across this:

"wine is already installed on 10.04" ... / THIS seems to be a FALSE statement

may be of interest to someone using Ubuntu 10.04 (or wants to use it)

Wow, didn't know that! Been thinking about using wine for GPU folding to rid myself of Winblows Virus.

Yes, I might give GPU Folding in Linux a try too.

    Learning to set it up.

The first time (a few yrs ago) I tried installing and running something in Wine, it failed ...

I've had pretty good luck with WINE over the years. Not 100%, but probably 3/5 pieces of software that I've tried to use would work. Maybe not EXACTLY like they're supposed to, but close enough that it works well.

That said, I currently have no need of wine, but interesting to know they have it installed by default.

I don't understand why they'd have WINE installed by default. Yes may of us do use it, but on the same token, WINE is a big security risk as its trying to emulate an unsecured OS. Thus many viruses that can infect Windows, can also infect WINE.

Given that risk and along with the ease of installing WINE in earlier Ubuntu versions, I don't see why they need to install it by default.

Does that mean the viruses can attack Wine or the whole system ?

Re: Did you know (Ubuntu 10.04)

They would generally just attack Wine. But Wine does have access to your entire profile. On my Ubuntu Wine install C: is linked to ~/.wine/drives/c_drive, D: is linked to my CDROM, Y: is linked to ~/, and Z: is linked to /.

Obviously no harm would be done to my CDROM or my / directory as they are read only. But a destructive virus could alter and or create files in my home partition. I don't know of any which actually gone that far, but it is possible.

So if you were to get a virus in Wine, its generally best to delete your ~/.wine directory (the equivalent of formating and reinstalling Windows).

Its also worth noting that most viruses are 'poorly' written as many of them utilize bugs in Window's applications to gain a foot hold within the OS. And without these applications running in Wine, the virus wont work. Other times the virus will attack Windows directly using some bug. And as we all know, Wine doesn't always respond the same as Windows does, especially when an application utilizes a quirky code.

Re: Did you know (Ubuntu 10.04)

    .

Sorry, didn't check out the report in post #1 myself; I can't find any mention in f.e. this page http://ubuntuguide.net/new-ubuntu-10...ce-ubuntu-9-10 either, nor is there a pointer to the same here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WineForAMD64 where installation instructions are posted ...

It seems that Spankin Partier 's thoughts about that (odd) fact were correct and that it would be wrong to install this by default (without prior knowledge of the user-owner), introducing possible negative security in a fresh install ...

This also points to the need to install Wine if a user wants or needs to use it in Ubuntu 10.04 http://blog.sudobits.com/2010/07/18/...-ubuntu-10-04/

I 'll better retract the former statement in post #1; I can't find proof that it is in the default install package

Even if its not installed, for those who need it, its still just a couple mouse clicks away.

Re: Did you know (Ubuntu 10.04)

I think the statement is incorrect. I installed wine after 10.04 was installed, from www.winehq.com

Unfortunately winamp doesn't work that well in ubuntu. Any suggestion for a good mp3 player in linux?
