Help with cooler choice on 775 q9550 on EP45-Exteme MB

    Hi All,

I have searched and searched the web to no avail reading different reviews with contradictions and varied opinions.

I intend to run my processor overclocked hopefully to around 3.5ghz so I suspect the stock cooler wont be up to the job.

I dont mind going for a large bolt on with 120mm fan if it means cool and quiet but the pc being quiet is essential as it will be used as a htpc as well as a games machine.

I know when I was right into this I would have been able to tell someone on the board straight away the right cooler or processor to go for, im hoping that you guys could return the favour and say Stan... get this coooler

Suggestions are much appreciated. The case is a Silverstone CW02B.

    Best wishes,

    Stan

The stock cooler will do better then you think. I ran mine 2 years folding 24/7 @ 3400. the cpu finally shut down via thermal overload the other day due to being totally stuffed with dirt. I'm replacing now since the cheap plastic pins broke during removal/reinstall.

there plenty of better coolers out there, I tend to thermalright. 50-60cfm 120mm fan at 100% is pretty quiet and does the job. Now a days it is pretty easy to use speed controls so it will be silent when not gaming,

Thanks for the reply TheGlasMan. I want to mod it though... i kinda want to, if I can achieve cooler and quieter then i'd be delighted. I have seen xigmatek dark knight which seems to get good reviews...

    Any other thoughts :-)

The Arctic Cooling Freezer pro works very well, and is relatively cheap, and quiet. I run one on both my Q6600 HTPC, and on AMD 940. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835186134

I have used the Coolermaster Hyper 212 with 2 120's on my wifes Q6600 @3.2 and my Q9550 @3.4 with zero probs. I dont find them loud at all - but I do run my GPU fans at 100% so the sound is most likely covered up. I like how the fans line up with my case fans as well in my set up. Triple 120's haha and a fourth if you want to count the 120 in the psu right above it all.

    Huzzah for airflow.
