losing internet but can still ping

I'm trying to connect an old toshiba laptop to the internet. It runs on Windows98SE but has only 64Mb RAM (I know, its too old really, but I do have a reason). I installed an ethernet card and it now connects to the internet - but just for about 5 minutes, after then I can't use a browser (I've tried Internet Explorer and Opera) - but I can ping places like google.com. If I reboot, it works again, but only for about 5 minutes, then back to same problem. I've checked for Malware (nothing reported). Have I got settings wrong? Could it be a faulty Ethernet card?
I've spent hours trying to sort it out (but not much of a computer expert) and I'm now tearing my hair out! Anyone out there have any ideas please?

could always connect with another pc, download what you need and burn it and stick it in the horse and cart you have.

Starting to think its to do with overheating (although it doesn't feel that hot to me). Have discovered that its not the time I'm browsing that leads to losing internet, but time laptop is on. Could that indicate card getting too hot?

Seems that the problem affects the browser, not the connection - because I can ping sites (by name) but IP address in browser doesn't work. Strange that it should work OK for 5 minutes, then need a reboot

are you using DHCP from the router ?
do other pc's work ok with the router ?
are you sure the drivers are correct for the network card (pcmcia ?)
can you confirm you have correct DNS settings...

from the cmd prompt (dos window) type "ipconfig /all" and note details.
now type "ipconfig /flushdns" . see if that helps at all.

let us know how you get on.

Bryan: Sorry, not computer literate enough to know what you mean by being "setup to use proxy connection in your browsers"

Yes, other PCs work with the router - no problems
Yes, I'm sure drivers are correct - it has checked for updated drivers
Ummm....what would correct DNS settings look like?

I ran ipconfig/all but not sure I can make a note of everything as the information scrolls up and I can only see the end of the information. Is it important that I make a note of all the information before running ipconfig/flushdns?

You can drag the dos window down to make it longer...
Its not so important for you but i was going to ask you to post the ipconfig info so we might better help you. Since other pc's work fine it is most probable that the router is set up for dhcp (Dynamic Host Control Protocol) which means the pc's are given the correct network settings when they connect to the router.
Try "ipconfig /flushdns" next time your laptop seems to stop browsing.
If that doesn't help then let us know and we can try to help further.

It wouldnt hurt to try another card or maybe try the card in another laptop to narrow down the issue too.

edit: its been so long since i had to think win98... and i am completely wrong as pre windows 2000 OS's didn't have a dns cache. sorry for the bum steer.
Try using winipcfg ( a windows app ) and use the "release all" then "renew all" buttons...
    eg..

google netsetup.exe. XP makes this little program for older OS that you want to network to.

I have ran this program on Win98 machines and was able to connect to the internet via ethernet just fine.

    it's a small 300kb file.
