mechanically the game functions NOTHING like the previous diablo games.
battlenet was a matchmaking service nothing more with a couple chat rooms thrown in for good measure back in the day.
diablo 3 actually operates exactly like an MMO it uses a client server setup.
map generation and alot of the game content and mechanics all run on blizzards servers (which is why its online only).
in fact you can even play the game before its completely installed because just like world of warcraft it will prioritize the textures and things you don't have yet and stream them to you as its needed.
functional its identical to world of warcraft. the only difference is that its instanced and plays with a diablo control scheme.
oh, and id like to point out that the launch has been a complete failure so far.
login issues last night when the gam elaunched, and the servers have crashed and gone offline for hours on 2 different occasions so far today.
its been a pretty damn pitiful showing by blizzard so far.

I think the engine is new. I'm not entirely convinced that it is an offshoot of wow, but I could be wrong. The front end/launcher is very reminiscent of wow, and that part is probably taken directly from it. But in terms of actual game assets... it seems... different.
For a company that runs the world's largest MMO, it is pretty amazing that they have boned the Diablo III launch for North America as badly as they have. Frankly I'm pretty disappointed in the single player support that this game has promised. I can understand an MMO going down like this on launch, but a single player game (with multiplayer support)?
Whereas the latter two are all I ever played on D2, and all I ever intended to play on D3. modru2004 explains the other big problem with D3: you don't actually have the game on your computer, just a portal. So even if you are playing SP, the Blizzard servers have to be in contact with your computer to serve up the content. Thus, anyone out of reliable internet contact cannot play the game, even SP. Or anyone connected to Blizzard's servers at the moment. Someone more cynical than myself might suspect that Blizzard want to persuade everyone onto the subscription system. They can **** off. I'd love to have played this game, and D2 was one of my top ten games of all time. But until they drop always-on they are not getting my money.

I bought the game off the site and I'm still waiting for the damn game to finish downloading. This if ••••••• ridiculous.
I'm in no hurry to play the game as most of my friends tend to play during the weekends but damn it I wish the game finished by now.
I'm seeing a lot of problems with blizzard servers, such as lag, disconnects. It's like WoW beta all over again.
Remember when Diablo 2 came out? Absolutely no problem with getting to play the game. The only thing people bitched about back then was that it was not true 3D since every game out there was coming out as 3D back during that time.

oh look the servers are down again.
I hear Blizzard was really innovative with Diablo III - server queues for single player games!
You like waiting in line for servers on an MMORPG? Now, Blizzard has added server waiting lists to single player games. Patent pending.
I don't mean to troll Diablo III fans, but I've never cared for the series and thought it was a bit overrated. And it seems like Blizzard has made some strange design decisions. I'm a big of fan as Steam and cloud computing as anybody, but I've never had any trouble running Steam in offline mode, and the whole "server queues for a single player game" thing is insane.
Back in those days, I was the only one of my friends who really gamed on the PC. My pals all had Super Nintendos or Playstations or N64s or whatever. I remember my friend showing me the first Diablo on the first PlayStation. The game needed two memory cards, one for your save game and one for your character data. I don't know how any console gamers lived with those stupid memory cards. At the point that games needed those, they should have been dropping hard drives in the consoles.

i bought diablo 3 because i played the hell out of diablo 2. figured id give it a shot. i like the game itself when you can play it. but this stupid mmorpg crap is probably one of the worst design decisions in game history.
world of warcraft and diablo had a baby.
its name is diablo 3.
PC Gamer is doing a review on Diablo 3 as it happens. Let me break the whole thing down for you in a simple picture.

At least it doesn't wipe your hard drive if you uninstall it like a certain game did on release.
