Upgrade to 5850?

It looks like Newegg has a sale for the Radeon HD 5850 1GB DDR5 for $160 and I've been thinking about upgrading my rig for a while now. My only concern is that maufacturer specs call for a minimum of a 500W power supply and I'm currently running a 450W corsair unit. Will the 33A that my 12V rail puts out be enough to reliably run my computer safely/reliably? If I need to upgrade my PSU what would you guys recommend? Details on my computer should be in my signature if you need them.

Corsair PSU I guess or any PSU that is high quality, reliable, seems 5850 require 40 amps on the +12V rail

Man, I have the 8800GTS 320mb and the 5850, the 5850 is going to give you such a great experience in comparison!
You could try to run the pc with the 450w and see what happens (nothing? lol), or just buy a new one. Get a 650w and stick with that for years to come hehe.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The 750W corsair on Newegg is only $10 more after rebate than the 650W unit. Is $90 a good price for that? Should I be cheap and go with the 650W for $80 instead?

Id get the 750W. That is definitelly a good price for it. I just bought the same one for a PC I built for my girlfriend actually. Works great.

the recommened amperage is 32 amp i believe on the 5850....you are boarderline, and i would not chance it ....get a newer psu...

Thanks for all the help guys. I just pulled the trigger on the Radeon, and I'm going to grab the Corsair PSU once they email me the gift card information. It should end up costing me about $235 for both once rebates and everything are applied. Not bad at all.

My experience with Newegg is they don't give you the promotional gift card until about 30 days after the purchase.

If you are considering the 750w, get that one. Or get a 650 modular for a cleaner case.

I almost bought a second 5850 today for CF and the cart said you would be emailed the code for the gift card code 4 days after invoice.

You are both correct. Apparently Newegg changed their policy on promotional gift cards since July 2010. The email I received for my gift card stated:

"A PROMOTIONAL GIFT CARD OFFERED WHEN YOU PURCHASE A PRODUCT WILL BE ISSUED TO YOU 30 DAYS AFTER YOU ARE INVOICED FOR YOUR PURCHASE."

Yea, I'm gonna go with the 750W. I debated between 450W and 550W when I bought my current PSU. I'm now pretty mad that I didn't shell out the extra $20 and get a 550W unit (which would be able to handle my new graphics card just fine). I'm not going to make the same mistake twice.
