Japanese authorities Tuesday "provisionally" declared the country's nuclear accident a level-7 event on the international scale for nuclear disasters -- the highest level -- putting it on par with the 1986 Chernobyl disaster.

I'm pro-nuclear, but Gizmodo did something kind of interesting today.

Considering that Japan has widened the quarantine zone to 80km - they showed what effect an 80km quarantine zone would happen if it was put in effect on the nuclear power plants nearest Los Angeles and Chicago. So I did it with the ones nearest me.

I am within an 80km range of one of the four nuclear plants in the Chicagoland region. There are two nuclear power plants in Wisconsin. They are oddly enough, right next to each other (but still considered separate plants) and they are are further than 80km from me.

I live about 40 Km (25 miles) as the radioactive crow flies from this nuclear power station complex.

Nuclear power really doesn't bother me. One of the two plants in Wisconsin offers free tours to the public daily. I should go sometime, I think it would be cool.

And at the current political climate for nuclear energy in the world today, it may be closed before long!

I mean, you have Italy and Germany talking about the possibility of being "post-nuclear" countries. Yuck.

I see the water vapor from Byron every clear day on the drive to work. On a really good day you can see it from the north side of Janesville. There's also a pretty nice golf course outside Byron with excellent views of the cooling towers.

Apparently since it isn't a public utility, I never seem to see the reactor at UW-Madison on any of the maps covering nuclear facilities. That one would be right at the edge of the 80km radius for me. I was somewhat closer while getting my BSME there. LOL.

They even have their own web site. I only actually saw the reactor area once, and that was as a high school student visiting the university during an Engineering Expo day.

Are Americans ever going to pick up that the lady who dumps the trash is more qualified than experienced politicians to run this country? That's because she has way more idea of what's involved to make things work, make ends meet and has the integrity to buy her own groceries.

I'm sorry- people around here b*tch, b*tch, and b*tch about the lack of leadership and integrity in our politicians and still come up with the same tired old names every time to run against Obama.

Yet all the while more worthy people clean the stools at our company every night- and we don't even know their names.

Yeah, the Obama administration and his commissions, task forces and initiatives. Jesus Christ, half the liberals with Master degrees in Washington DC are employed in some Obama task force somewhere.

I guess he has to do something. The American people are starting to notice the gas prices. This task force will be a complete joke unless they come back with "Drill for oil in the United States" and "Stop printing money and making the dollar worthless." Though I'm sure the answer will be "Spend more imaginary government money on green projects" and "Tax the ebil ebil oil companies."
