    Odd Problems. Need help

    Hello,

I have an Asus G51VX gaming laptop ( Core2Duo T9600 with Nvidia GTX260M Win7 Pro and 4 gigs of ram) that I got 1.5 years ago. It used to chew through games without sweat but because of grad school I have not played on it for at least 6 month. Yesterday when I fired up BF2 singleplayer I've noticed that my game starts with 99 FPS but 5 min into the game the FPS rate drops to 15 even if I stay just in respawn zone. More importantly, I used to pay FSX at High graphics settings with DX10 but now my FSX frame rates stay constant at 5-10, which is unplayable. My computer also compleatly crashes completely (I need to pull the battery out to restart it) two min after I try to install older games like Age of Empires 2. The fact that my frame rates drop and crashes occur a couple minutes into the game is strange.

    I have tried the following
    1) Norton Virus scans
    2) SpyBot spyware scans
    3) removing all startup programs in msconfig
    4) installing newest Nvidia patches and the ones recommended on the Asus website
5)I monitored process CPU usage with Norton after starting a game and nothing beside the game seems to use more than 3% of my cores.

When I was a serious gamer I used to reinstall my PCs every 6 months - 1 year and reinstalling this laptop would probably fix all my problems again. However, right now I'm writing my graduate thesis and do not want to mess with my research data until I'm finished. So if there is no easy fix for my problems then I'll wait until my thesis gets approved to reinstall this laptop.

    Thanks for your help

Sounds like a temperature problem to me...

I had the same thing happen to me on my G50V...The only fix was to replace the HS/Fan combo; a known issue (the fan slows down/doesn't ramp up properly)

    Hmmm...
I paid closer attention to the span sounds and I think I remember it spinning up to higher frequencies than it does now. I dont want to replaces the fans yet but I will see if I could remove some dust today. I also ran SpeedFan and got the following temps

    Watching a movie in Chrome
    GPU 93C
    CPU 59/58 C

Playing BF2 until it starts lagging
    GPU 105C
    CPU 70/70C

    Idle
    GPU 86C
    CPU 50/50C

Restart BF2 until it starts lagging
    GPU 106C
    CPU 70/70C

Those GPU temps look rather hot to me. My older Nvidia card (for a desktop) is set to throttle down once it gets over 82C. Your card is hitting that at idle!

Thank you for pointing the temperature issue out. I bought some compressed air and dusted my laptop yesterday. That brought idle GPU temps down to 65-70 C. 15min into BF2 my GPU temps stayed at 90C and the game never started lagging. This is not very cool but this laptop is known for being hot. I will test out FSX later, since that is more important for me. I use FSX to prepare for my real flying lessons.

After opening this laptop I quickly realized that replacing the fan wont be very easy. The GPU fan is connected to heat pipes that cool the CPU and some chips on the MOBO.
