PC restarts instead of Shutdown (P8P67 LE)

My new system build has the Intel i7 2600K chip with the Sandy Bridge platform on an Asus P8P67 LE motherboard. The system boots up and performs as expected. When shutting down the computer from Windows 7, the system automatically restarts after 3-4 seconds. If I press the power button while restarting, it will reset similar to crtl+alt-del and continues in a restart loop. I have to hold the power button for several seconds before the system shuts down; or turn off the power supply. Pressing and holding the power button is not ideal since you have to hold it for a specific amount of time (like exactly 5 sec; not more). If left alone, the computer, boots back into Windows fine.

This system runs on Windows 7 and has the drivers that came with the revision 3 board.

This board has just been making it into the wild with the Revision 3 (post sandy bridge recall).
My thoughts point to the pins and wires to the power button. Maybe, this connector is reversed. I wanted to get some feedback before proceeding by trial and error. Searching the web did not give me a definitive answer to this scenario.

Also go into the bios and for power off select instant off, some boards default to 4 seconds. Sorry don't remember where in bios but it is there.

    @ wonkanoby
Thanks for the helpful suggestion. I tried them and the scenario has not gone away.
    • Troubleshooting already performed
    • Disconnected the Power button and Reset button; started the computer with a paperclip.
    • Right-clicked Computer > Properties > Advanced System settings > Start Recovery > unchecked Reboot
    • Disabled all wakes in the Bios

I haven't found the Power off > Select Instant off. I will continue to look for it.

Found your posting through an online search...I have exactly the same problem (computer restarts instead of stays shutdown). The only way to get it to stay off is to hold down the power button for awhile or remove the battery. I don't think either one is good for the computer.

I have a Lenovo T400 laptop running Windows 7 64-bit. I've tried changing power options settings and a whole bunch of BIOS settings. Nothing has worked. I've been encouraged to partition my harddrive and install a clean version of Windows 7 or some other OS to see if I can get it to shutdown from that OS, but haven't had the time. I also think its a issue outside of the OS anyways.

Only things I'm left with are its a BIOS issue, a virus, or a motherboard issue. My computer knowledge really ends with software, so I wouldn't even no where to start with a motherboard issue or a problem with the power button. Have you had any luck with this problem?

Have you disabled the "wake on" options in you network adapter? You can go to the control panel, device manager, network adapters and click on properties. There are wake on options that can be disabled. Mine are listed under power management. The 3 options I have are : wake on magic packet, wake on magic packet from power off state and wake on link. I disabled mine to stop the computer from waking up on its own. I tried using an updated network adapter driver from Intel but it allowed the computer to wake up on its own with all wake items disabled. I went back to the driver from Asus and I haven't had a problem since.

All wakes in the Bios and OS have been disabled. The situation even occurs before you boot into the OS. If the computer crashes before the Windows screen appears, it will exhibit similar behavior when pressing the power off button for several seconds.

My thoughts point to the motherboard, bios, or some incompatible components.

    To recap

    Troubleshooting already performed
    • Disconnected the Power button and Reset button; started the computer with a paperclip.
    • Right-clicked Computer > Properties > Advanced System settings > Start
    • Recovery > unchecked Reboot
    • Disabled all wakes in the Bios
    • Change Ram Slots and ran MemOk
    • Remove all non-essential components.

Hi Robert, have you disconnected all cables from the case that are connected to the MB? For example the USB, sound or 1394? Also, have you checked the 8 and 24 pin power connectors to make sure they're snug? If you have any pci cards that aren'r necessary to boot try removing those too. Download memtest86 and test your memory with that. If you've done all that I would try another power supply and make sure the MB isn't grounded by a loose screw. I'm probably grasping are straws here but just trying to help.

What happened to "My thoughts point to the pins and wires to the power button.". Disconnect the power sw cable from the mobo and use a screw driver to short the pins and start up your PC. If it stays up and shuts down normally from within Windows you'll know that the power switch was to blame.

Robert says he disconnected the power and reset buttons and started the computer with a paper clip. He must be at wits end about now.

I think you have a bad board, judging by model its still under warrantee. You've exhausted all possible causes and then some, time to contact support for an RMA I'm thinkin.

Re: PC restarts instead of Shutdown (P8P67 LE)

This situation exhausted my patience; so I returned the board and claimed that it was defective. It may have been defective, yet I did not have the extra computer parts and tools to continue troubleshooting the power going into the board. I even removed the motherboard from the case and ran it caseless. Each technical support personnel had different approaches including returning the board to the retailer. In the end, technical support did not resolve my scenario and gave me no traction in troubleshooting.

My only thought points to the Marvell® PCIe SATA 6Gb/s controller, which gives you 1 xUltraDMA, 1 xExternal SATA port, 1 xSATA. Try disabling the "Marvell Storage OPROM" controller in your bios (if you have no IDE drives). It could eliminate a conflict.

My solution was to return the product and upgrade to the Asus P8P67. This board had more bios revisions on the Asus website. And Guess what? I am no longer experiencing these issues. Good luck to anyone who stumbles on this thread.
