    mobo cpu upgrade ?

I tried to upgrade my athlon 630 to a phenom 965. Turns out my stupid hp mobo only handles a 95w cpu. If I upgrade my mobo for the new cpu, What are the odds that my hard drive will boot with the new hardware? Th hp people told me the phenom would work......

1st, unless your in desperate need for a bit more processing power, you won't notice a whole lot of difference between the 2 cpus under normal pc usage.

2nd, you shouldn't have to reinstall windows. you will need to activate again though. shouldn't be anything more than clicking activate.

here's a link to your motherboard with specs.

    alvorix rs880

there aren't alot of 785 am3 micros around. this is one that newegg has that supports the 965.

    ECS Black Series A785GM-M AM3 AMD 785G

ecs link to the cpu spec tab.

    A785GM-M (V1.0)

I've heard that the phenoms are about 9% faster than athlon, clock for clock, with the additional l3. Add the faster clock speed, I came up with 29% faster. Not sure if it really works like that. Photoshop premiere is mainly what I want to go a little faster. Maybe photoshop elements would go a little quicker. New mb and psu wasn't in the budget, so I was gonna use the good ol' best buy credit card. They got an asus board that would work.

My pathetic 250w psu works for now, not sure how much extra she's got.
I'd have to alter my case connectors to work. I took my girlfriends moms hard drive out of her old celron and tried to get it to boot in the pIII rig I built and she wouldn't fire up. Don't want to spend money I really don't have to have it not boot. I"m an impulse buyer

I was at my mb's spec site. I have an email from hp telling me the 965 would work, so I bought it. It wasn't till after my computer said it's not supported I realized the 95 watt limit thing.

what i was looking for was the best bet on not having to reinstall windows. never tried that kind of thing with a prebuilt.

i was getting ready to dump the ecs page and noticed it has a p8 connection. so it's questionable whether your psu would work.

as for the asus board with the 880 chipset, i don't know.

785 am3 and ddr3 was what i was looking for.

Thanks for your input. The old lady wants me to return the 965 to td. Not sure if they'll charge me restocking fee or what not. Had my heart set on a phenom for some reason. I just don't know what to do. The mb from best buy isn't exactly a new board... I just don't know.

let's see if there is a lot of speed difference between the 2 cpus.

    http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/366/mirrors.php

extract this and from the folder run a 1m calculation on your rig with the 630.

i just ran this on a 925/ddr2 rig with oc'd using the htt to run 3400mhz like the 965. i get 20.386s.

edit: just ran superpi on a stock 630/ddr2 and got 28.703s

you might be pretty close with your math.

another i don't know how good a comparison it is for your photoshop. there may be a better test.

i was hoping on lessening the pain of sending it back to td.

    That's freaking awesome....

My 630 with ddr3 found the millionth decimal of pi in 28.813 seconds. It's gonna be really painful to send it back....I just don't know.
