    Smile Help with mem upgrade

    hi all

Hey, I know zilch about mem, but it seems relatively cheap these days so I thought I'd add or upgrade on my E8400 rig. You can see what I have in my sig, plus I have a link below.

I like gaming (BFBC2 is my game of choice right now) Other than that its just mundane stuff, web surfing and email.

Mobo spec says support up to 16G of DDR2 1366/1066/800/667 modules. A quick check of Newegg seemed to only have slow speed stuff.

    Any guidance who be appreciated.

Im not sure about intels but I think the only way you would be able to get 1066 speeds or faster is through ocing.

I run my memory @ DDR2 800 speeds and its fine.

    Your motherboard uses DDR2 RAM.

Anything beyond 1066MHz effective DDR2, known as PC2-8500 is unofficial and known as overclocked. These are hand picked memory chips and memory module PCB's that are certified to run at over 1066MHz.

Your E8400 Core 2 Duo has a 1333MHz FSB, which on that board runs the memory up to 1066MHz. As soon as you overclock the FSB you'll be able to also run the DDR2 at 1066MHz+ speeds.

You sound like a normal PC user, in such case just go for two identical PC2-8500 DDR2 modules, i.e. 2x 4GB.

Thanks Gforce, but a quick check of newegg didn't have any of what you prescribe.

You don't need to upgrade memory at this point in time. It will make no difference to your system's performance.
