    SSD and HDD question

Hey guys, Why do some people use a SSD for a boot drive and a HDD for the rest? 128gb SDD seems kind of small considering the size of today's games. I guess 1 reason would be is the price but why aren't they larger capacities?
Is it possible to install lets say a game on the HDD and play it through the SDD?

128 is room for plenty of games. My 150 velociraptor holds like 6

people use that particular setup because it gives you the largest performance boost.

there's little reason to install games on an ssd at this point. the only thing that will change is load times, you won't see any other performance increases.

best thing to do is install your os and apps to the ssd, keep data and large games/apps on another hdd.

right now the technology isn't there to make larger drives at acceptable prices. we're getting there though, pretty rapidly too it seems.

The price / space constraints of SDD are the reason why. Your best bet is - OS on the SSD, place your games that are going to need the performance boost most (usually what you play the most, at least as far as large games go), and put the rest on a storage drive. You'll get lightning quick boots, and still great read/write performance for what you need it for the most. And you can always swap around which games you have on there and which ones you have elsewhere, should your priorities change.

Good points. He should easily be able to fit his OS.. apps and a few games on SSD for a pretty reasonable price. Example..

64GB SATA II 3.0Gb/s 2.5" G2 Series Solid State Drive (SSD) With SandForce 1222 Controller $79.99

^^ Two of those in a RAID0 with get you about 120GB formatted space and be plenty speedy for well under $200. Put the remainder of the data and apps/games on spinnin' platters.

Some games will benefit tremendously on a SSD. Bad company 2 and Crysis has horrendous load times, and I cant imagine myself going back and waiting a minute to load a level. Its actually a tactical advantage since I always load the map first and get my vehicle of choice in BC2.

i thought they added a wait period at the beginning of rounds in bc2. in that case there's no real advantage.

I think they installed the option on the servers to change the time. Many servers do not use it.
