New mobo + 5870 no POST

    I feel like a n00b.

This whole fiasco started when I shipped my computer to europe. Well it finally got here with the Thermaltake case destroyed and my DFI mobo dead.

So I had to go buy new parts and got an Asus M3N72-D mobo, got it to work at first but noticed my PCI E bus was @ 8X instead of 16X. So I switched video card to a diferent slot and for my life I couldnt get rig to post again. I got sloppy and shorted the mobo and killed it by accidently shorting power and reset pins, I was running the rig outside of case.

Anyways I RMAed the Asus and purchased an Asrock A770DE+ after reading about supposed incompatibilty between this XFX 5870 and nforce chipsets like the Asus had. So this new Asrock mobo has AMD 770 chipset and Im guessing its gonna post right out of the box. And still nothing, I take everything outside of case again and am running naked again and still no friggen post and this is driving me crazy. I tried swapping cards, have an old 7600GS lying around and I got rig to post but with no signal on monitor, screen is black. I also tryed running with 1 stick of ram instead of 4, still no post. This is driving me crazy, im starting to think this 5870 is incompatible with a lot of mobos. I dont understand though it worked perfectly with my original DFI 790FX board. Now its 2 mobos I cant get it to post with. Am I doing something wrong? I stopped working on it cause I dont want to get frusttrated again and get sloppy. But I really dont know what to do.
Im thinking maybe by updating VGA bios will help. I need it to post to do that though, thinking of taking it to a shop and have them flash the card, what do you guys think?

Re: New mobo + 5870 no POST

    Update:

I just talked to xfx tech support and they say that board should be compatible with the card.
What if this is just a bad Asrock mobo? Reason Im kinda suspecting is cause I cant get a post even with a diferent video card, I hear a post beep with the 7600 but get no display on screen. With the 5870 I get no post beep or display nothing. You think it may just be a bad mobo?

Should I still try flashing VGA bios? I would rather not but if i have too.

Btw, mobo is running latest bios already out of the box

Thats what im trying to figure out, why ohh why do I get a post beep and no display with the 7600? If I would get a display then I would know the mobo is fine and its something with the 5870. Cause Im positive that 7600 works, havent used it in like 4 years but i know it worked

I know you have probably done this already, but did you set the primary graphics adapter setting from pci to pci-e.

Do you have a basic pci video card? if so then try that and if you don't get a post then the MoBo is toast.

Hmm, nah I dont have a PCI card.

I dunno about the board, just for testing I tryed posting with no video card at all. Heard like 6 beeps (AMI bios) which I think means no video then finally a normal post beep. So im thinking the board might be ok. Going to a freinds house in a little while to flash the 5870 to latest bios, maybe that will help

Remove cmos battery with power cord unplugged. Test cmos battery and make sure it is 3v, or get a brand new one model 2032. Seen new a board with cheap battery that was not up to the proper voltage.

Re: New mobo + 5870 no POST

Meh, couldnt get it to post in friends rig either. This is the 3rd mobo I see that it wont post with. Im starting to think the card is defective. Although I dont see how, it worked with my DFI board and when I tried it a few weeks ago in another friends intel based rig. I got it working at first with the Asus nforce board, but when I tried switching to top X16 slot I couldnt get it to post again. This has got to be the most quirky part I have ever worked with.

And not having resources to troubleshoot is the worst part. I think Im just gonna take the card and board to a shop on monday and have them verify functionality of both and I will give them the flash drive I have ready to flash VGA bios. I sure hope the board is ok cause its gonna be a real pain in the butt to ship this all the way back to america so It can be RMAed through newegg

Some folks say a PCB should not be handled more than 2-3 times before it is considered compromised.

The only reason I see a PCB failing after 2 or 3 times is with the posibility of static discharge. I usually touch metal before touching a computer part just in case...

Just got a call from PC shop.

    They have confirmed the incompatibility.

Card and board work fine separatly, but wont work together. Even after bios flash.

    Time to find another board,sigh.

What do you guys think of this?:

Re: New mobo + 5870 no POST

Not easy to find a decent DDR2 AMD board. I really would hate too cause I really dont need to upgrading but im looking at just getting new stuff.
    Maybe:

    X6 T1100
    Gigabyte 870 UD3 board
    8 gigz hyperx DDR3 1333 CL7
    Corsair H70 for cooling
    Thermaltake Element T for case

would total around 600 euros which is around 700 bucks.

Goverment loans you the money(up to 3000) for new rig and you have 36 months to pay it off with no intrest.

Im thinking of doing the above if I cant find a DDr2 mobo soon
