Cannot copy files from Win7 to XP machine

From Windows 7 machine to XP machine. I was able to map all the drives on the XP machine I previously shared with my current machine, which used to run XP, now runs 7.

Win7 sees the target machine under Network, I can open folders and files on the shared drives on the XP machine, but I cannot copy files to the XP machine from the Win7 machine. I select the file, use copy, then paste it into the target folder on the mapped drive on the XP machine. After about 15 seconds, I get an error stating that there is a problem copying the files to the target location, try again or cancel. Try again doesn't work.

I can copy files from the XP machine to Win7 no problem at normal speeds but going the other way starts out slowly then prompts the error.

I have altered the network settings in Win7 according to MS:

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...ons-of-windows

But the end result is identical. My XP machine is my back up box for large amounts of data, all of its drives except the OS drive were already set up for sharing and permission to change files is granted. I need this to work.

If it helps any, I can navigate to the XP machine either from the Network icon in explorer on Win7, or by mapping each drive individually, which is how it was set up when both comps were running XP. In neitherr case can I copy files to the XP machine on any of the drives.

Both OSes are up to date, and I've never had a problem like this before.

    All help is appreciated.

On the Win7 side try running this from an admin command prompt:

netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

If it doesn't help then can reenable autotuning:
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=normal

    Appreciate your reply.

I won't be able to attempt this until sometime tonight, but for my own info, what exactly doe this do?

Well it's a long shot but may help

It's an adjustment for the TCP Window size
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932170

    * you will need to reboot for changes to take affect

    Thanks for the link.

It is worth a try, and I'll do so tonight.

If it fails, absent other advice, I've spent way too much time on this already, and another Win7 copy isn't THAT expensive. Allegedly, Win7 machines together don't experience this type of hassle.

    The results are mixed.

Larger files can be moved to mapped drives on the XP machine.

So far, none I tested have errored out. This is progress, of a sort.

The speeds are incredibly erratic and always much lower than they were when both comps ran XP.

I'm going to set up Syncback to run all of my usual back ups and see if anything fails. At the speeds I am getting now this will take a pretty long time.

Re: Cannot copy files from Win7 to XP machine

I'm noticing something similar using Win7 and XP-64
depending on which machine starts the copy or drive mapping

    From the XP-64 machine:
Map Network Drive and select a share on the Win7 machine
and then copy files from XP-64 to Win7 share
the speed is pretty slow @ 7MB/sec

    From the Win7 side:
Map Network Drive and select share on the XP machine
    (using the same original files)
and then copy them from the XP64 to the same destination drive on the Win7
    it's much faster @ 35 MB/sec

Weird. I even updated my router firmware, all the XP drivers (the Win7 64 ones are all brand new, up to date), and can't think of anything else to do at this point.

When I pull from the XP to Win7 box, the speeds are flat out and steady. Going the other way, from 7 to XP gives me the erratic, slow speeds, and then only with the fix you posted.

My back ups all go one way, however, so slow and erratic isn't going to cut it.

Re: Cannot copy files from Win7 to XP machine

I was about to do this (use an XP machine as a backup to WIN7) but I may not bother after reading of your woes.

However whilst reading it one thing did spring to mind that probably has nothing to do with it but you never know. Are all the drives using the same file system?

    Regards

Yes. all the drives involved are NTFS.
