A close family friend has just been diagnosed with breast cancer.

Thanks guys, I think we all do what we can.

We just need some help with the electric bill ... and maybe some definitive information on progress from the project owners.

    Sorry to hear this, John.
In this specific field, a lot has been done already and outcomes are much, much better than they were.
A lot has to do with early detection, of course.
I truly hope for a positive outcome for your friend.

That's pretty much how it is. Folding@Home tries to discover what conditions cause proteins fold and misfold.
Breast cancer is pretty much curable. (If not too far progressed) My cousin has survived it and I have great hopes for my sisters best friend, who was recently diagnosed. Keep cheerful, support her and hope for the best. The uncertainty is the most scary part. As the diagnosis becomes firmer most likely the hope will be confirmed. Most likely there will be trauma but I can tell you from personal experience the love of friends and family will minimize that and leave a glow that will last the rest of her life.

Hate to say it BG, but PandeGroup aren't Oncologists, they're biologists, biophysicists and biochemists. They post their publications, but don't expect one to be titled "A Cure for Cancer as a Result of Distributed Computing". The real beauty of what PG does is expand the knowledge of protein synthesis and publish it so others may apply the learnings.. So from that standpoint its very difficult to truly ascertain the impact F@H has had on specific disease research. But take heart from the idea that every new development we contribute to has a much broader impact than a single paper.. it cascades down through all the developments that come after

I'm remiss in replying. So far so good, it was luckily (or shall we say a damned good screener) very early stages, radiation only and a good prognosis.

    Thanks for the kind words.
