    hardly boinc-like computing. boinc or folding is donating your computing time to generate scientific data, whether its about proteins, or pharma or aliens . bitcoin's "mining" is just supporting a pointless currency system doomed to failure by simple fact that end users don't wants coins, they just want to cash out. (BTC values have plummeted in the last few weeks)

    I'd just rather do something that generates meaningful data

    sorry, i wasn't trying to be extra harsh. If you've got the ATI hardware on hand right now, its definitely profitable. with the drops in prices and the increases in difficulty, payback periods are getting longer on purpose-bought hardware. i'd be wary of investing too much into it, and I wouldn't sit on BTC in case the bottom falls out completely
