Re: So how many of you nerds dropped your Cable TV service?

Comcast is Fiber based too and wait till the FiOs "$80 bundle" special runs out! and all that outdated talk of sharing the line with cable is moot anymore. Like I said in another thread most modern cable plants have tons of headroom with the new nodes when things get congested we just add another laser.

i dont necessarily care about FTTP vs FTTN.. just price. I get 25mbps down with no bandwith cap for the price of 10 or 15 down on comcast

The last bill I got with Qwest (local phone company) was almost $150.00. This was for Directv and DSL service only, no phone. I dropped Directv and now I'm about $60 a month ahead every month counting my Tivo fee of $13.00 a month and any shows I have to buy from Amazon. The best part about saving over $700.00 a year? No contracts! If I get tired of watching a show, I stop buying it. I pay for what I want, not all the stupid sports channels and shopping channels I never watched on Directv.

The problem is I think more and more people will start doing what I'm doing and that's when ISP's will start raping us for service. After all, they LOVE to tout how fast their service is, but if you actually start using all that speed on a regular basis they consider this "excessive" and jack up the price. I don't care about 100mbps down when the cap keeps getting lowered.

I would get rid of Directv but my internet service is too slow (clearwire). I'm too far off the beaten path for anything faster.

Yea, thats whats nice about FIOS right now.. 80/mo for 25 down with no cap (total package price). I don't use the phone, but the TV is basically only a 20/mo add-on since the internet alone would be like 50 or 60 (so its a no-brainer at that cost). Oh, and no contract with guaranteed pricing for 12 months. As a renter and heavy internet user, comcast wanted 2x that for slower connection, 250GB cap (which i've always worried about exceeding) AND a 2 year contract.

I don't doubt that FIOS will be changing their pricing and policies over the coming years, but I will be trying my damndest to avoid Comcast until that happens. Unfortunately, I can't change to your model because I don't ever watch shows.. only sports
