Folding on a Server with WHS2011?

Although it was not officially supported the original Windows Home Server ( WHS) could be persuaded to run Nvidia XP GPU drivers and then run GPU Folding. This worked well for me since the server was always on and doesn't need to use a graphics card.

I recently upgraded to WHS2011 which is a a 64 bit OS and now that WHS 2011 seems working well for me I thought I would check if I can do the same with this version. Strangely, the Nvidia search function will not run to confirm which drivers to use, so its being blocked or can't recognize the OS. Obviously I can do this manually but I don't want to create any big problems.

I will make a backup of the OS and then try. I have the following options for graphics drivers for my GTX260, Windows 7, Vista, XP, Server 2003 all in 64 bit version. I guess Server 2003 would be a good starting point.

    Anyone done this?

I did it on WHS v1 with the GPU tracker; worked well

I have no idea if its possible with V2 but you could try

WHS is based on Server 2008v2 so if you can find drivers that work with that then they probably work with WHS2011. I've actually got a whs2011 box running, but it doesn't have a GPU in it :\

Well you can fix that easily enough . There are no Server 2008 drivers so its either W7 or S 2003.

well I'm more of a bigadv guy, so I think i'll leave the box in its current 'low power' configuration

currently its a downclocked/undervolted wolfdale pentium dual core with g41 chipset IGP. barely pulls anything from the wall

I tried tonight. Downloaded the latest W7 drivers on advice WHS 2011 should be able to use them. No issues.

Tried the installer and didn't have much luck - lots of no responding errors. Being pressed for time, I installed GPU2 manually (GTX 260 that has been folding for 2+ years in the server) and it seemed to go OK.

Shame about the tracker thingy, it looks a nice package, wish It had been around a few years back.

So in the morning I will check if WHS2011 and GPU2 are being nice to each other.

    Thanks for the help.

All is OK and my stats should update soon.
As a thanks for the help, I tried tracker on another box and will try SMP and GPU for a week if the weather stays cool.

Well i hope it works out well. Shame about the tracker, its quite a nice little front-end program. I use it on my main rig since it has a nice function whereby it automagically turns off folding if you run a game or other listed program

I agree the tracker is good it made it easy to setup SMP and GPU. Didn't find that turn off feature yet, whats I would like is for GPU to back off nicely rather than for me to turn it off, I forget to turn it back on ...

Gaming pause can be found here...

You just need to add whatever program you want to stop to the games.txt file, which is found inside the main GPU tracker folder/config

yea it does this too. a lifesaver for me since i do the same exact thing (forget). Most games are already on there, along with a number of other common programs. for some it kind of unnecessarily turns off folding (itunes?) When you add a program to the list, just append it to the end of the games.txt by adding the actual executable name that shows up in taskmanager (aka whatever.exe)
