    Video upgrade question

    Hey guy's

I have an older socket 939 board in a system that currently runs win7 64 bit OS, I have the system connected to my Vizio 32" HDTV and would like to upgrade the video.

I have a Raedon 5750 hd that I would like to use in this system, when I install it the video does not initilize.

The mother board in the system is the Asus Amberine M and shows to have a pciex 16 slot.

Seeing as how the vid card I want to use is pci e 2.1 card what are the chances I can get it to work?

Is anyone aware if a bios update allows the use of a 2.1 card on this board?

    Thanks,

    Dafanman

the 2.1 and above cards are backwards compatible afaik...

Did you connect the card to a monitor first, an then set the card to the resolution of your TV ?

    mmettin: Thanks for your response.

Yes I have connected the card to a monitor and it never initalizes at all, not even a post screen.

I know the card works because it was pulled from a working system the same day I tried it on the Asus Mb.

Just trying to decide if its worth it to mess with updating the bios to see if that will make it work or just leave the bios alone and start looking for a pci-e ver 2.0 card as im not finding any useful information on wether a bios update for that board enables that capability.

Ive been out of the hardware loop for some time and have lost track of what's what in the vid card/mb world.

    Thanks again,

Before I'd flash a bios, I'd try to clear the cmos first; and then go from there

No insult intended, as I've done it myself, are the auxiliary power connector(s) hoooked up. Also your power system may not be up to the task or you need to switch the connectors to feed the 5870.

Does the board post with the integrated graphics?

    TheGlasMan,

Thanks for that suggestion, the card only has a single power connector which is connected and power is provided by a 750watt Corsair PSU.

Sidd: Yes post and boot to windows is do-able with the intergrated graphics.

Im starting to think Im going to have to get a pcie ver 2.0 card for my personal system to have decent graphics, and put the 5750 in my shop computer.

    UPDATE:

I ended up getting a Sparkle 1gb Pci-e ver 2.0 card from the egg, installed it and all is well now.

    Thanks to everyone who responded.
